‘Not Suitable for Work’ Canceled by Hulu: Could the Comedy Find a New Home?

Hulu has canceled Not Suitable for Work after just one season, leaving fans wondering whether the comedy’s story is really over. The series, created by Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy, built an audience after premiering in June, but its first-season finale ended on a major cliffhanger that left plenty of room for the story to continue.

The cancellation is disappointing news for viewers who became invested in the show’s unusual group of friends. However, there is still a possibility that Not Suitable for Work could return elsewhere.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. Television, which produces the series, plans to shop the show to other potential networks or streaming platforms. That means Hulu’s decision does not necessarily mark the final chapter for the comedy.

Where Could the Story Go Next?

The biggest reason fans are hoping for another season is the unresolved drama from the finale.

Not Suitable for Work centers on two groups of roommates living across the hall from one another in a Murray Hill apartment building. Abby and AJ occupy one apartment, while Davis, Josh, and Kel live in the other.

The Season 1 finale left viewers with a particularly complicated romantic situation.

Davis and AJ were caught kissing by Josh — who happens to be AJ’s first hookup from college. That revelation could create a new love triangle if the series returns, while also putting the friendships between the roommates under additional pressure.

A second season could therefore continue exploring the group’s relationships, romantic complications and everyday life while building on the cliffhanger introduced in the finale.

Could Mindy Kaling Return?

Not Suitable for Work was created for television by Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy. Kaling executive produced the first season alongside Grandy and Howard Klein.

The series was produced by Kaling International in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Kaling and Grandy have overall deals.

If another platform ultimately picks up the comedy, the return of the original creative team would give the series the best chance of maintaining the tone and character dynamics established in its first season. However, no Season 2 creative lineup has been officially announced.

For now, Not Suitable for Work remains canceled at Hulu, but Warner Bros. Television’s reported plans to shop the series elsewhere mean its future is not necessarily closed.

Fans will have to wait and see whether another streamer decides the story is worth continuing.

‘Not Suitable for Work,’ Season 1, streaming now on Hulu.
