At just 19, Alabama singer Joe Henley is already reconsidering his future after joining Season 30 of The Voice. Before the competition, he had little experience performing in front of an audience and was focused on pursuing basketball. Now, after winning a challenging Battle on Team Riley Green, Henley is exploring opportunities in music that he never expected to have.
During an October 16, 2026, interview with Talented Universe on the NDB Media Network, Henley opened up about his unexpected journey, the advice Green gave him, and the country stars who inspired his musical style.

Joe Henley Had Little Experience Performing Before ‘The Voice’
Before joining the show, Henley usually sang at home, in his backyard, or around a small group of people. His experience performing for others was largely limited to a small room at a truck stop where his mother had been running a ministry for more than 40 years.
During his Blind Audition, Henley sang with his eyes closed because he was nervous about cracking his voice. When he finally opened his eyes and saw the coaches turning their chairs, the moment became real.
“I think I had done great with my nerves up until that point, and then I saw them looking at me,” he recalled.

Both Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green turned for him, and Henley eventually chose Team Riley. The attention following his performance also brought an unexpected increase in social media interest.
“I don’t think anything can really prepare you for actually living that,” he said, describing the experience of suddenly reaching a much larger audience.
Green also offered advice that helped Henley feel more confident about pursuing music. When the teenager asked what his coach would do if he were 19 again and had not started a music career, Green encouraged him to go out and give it a try.
That advice became especially meaningful as Henley faced more experienced singers in the Battles.
Riley Green Picks Joe Henley After a Difficult Battle
In his latest Battle, Henley faced Kenna Elpers as the two performed Green and Ella Langley’s hit duet, Don’t Mind If I Do. Singing his coach’s own song added pressure, but the pair delivered a performance with gentle guitar and complementary vocals.
The coaches praised both contestants, with Clarkson comparing Elpers’ vibrato to Alison Krauss and Henley’s vocal tone to country legend Randy Travis.
“You open your mouth and it doesn’t matter what you’re singing. Your voice has such a depth to it. It just commands attention. That’s something you can’t teach. That’s just God given,” Clarkson told Henley.
Adam Levine and Queen Latifah also praised the young singer’s powerful voice. Green admitted that choosing between the two contestants was extremely difficult because he appreciated both their talent and hard work.
“I’m such a big fan of both of y’all and I really wanted both of y’all on my team,” Green said.

Ultimately, Green chose Henley as the winner, allowing him to continue on Team Riley. However, the victory came with mixed emotions. Henley had admired Elpers’ voice and personality and struggled to imagine beating someone he considered more experienced.
“I felt like I didn’t deserve it fully,” he admitted.
Despite his doubts, the Battle marked another important step in his journey. Henley also described singing alongside Green as one of the coolest experiences of his life, even though performing in front of the coaches made him nervous all over again.
The Country Stars Who Inspired Henley’s Sound
Henley named Green, Keith Whitley, Vince Gill, Don Williams, and Travis Tritt among his musical influences. He particularly enjoys older country music because its stripped-back sound fits the style he hopes to develop.
He also explained that his favorite part of singing is communicating emotion. He wants listeners to feel the meaning behind a song rather than simply hear the lyrics. To improve his lower register, he practices singing along to Randy Travis’ Promises. He also works on challenging vocal runs from Bridge Over Troubled Water, including Tori Kelly’s version.
These influences help explain why the young singer is drawn to traditional country music and the storytelling that comes with it.

Henley Reveals How His Career Plans Unexpectedly Changed
Before The Voice, basketball had been Henley’s main focus. He considered attending college to play the sport and even thought about pursuing a professional basketball career overseas.
However, his plans changed quickly when he graduated from high school and flew to take part in the competition just three days later. As music opportunities began opening up, he started considering taking a year away from basketball to see where his singing journey might lead.
Henley is now trying not to put too much pressure on himself to predict his future. He understands that the show could lead to a full-time music career, but he is also prepared to return to a different line of work if that opportunity does not come.
“If it were all to come down today and I was at home and I went back to work with heavy machinery and blue collar, that’s fine,” he said.
For Henley, the opportunity to perform on national television, learn from established country artists, and build friendships with fellow contestants has already made the experience worthwhile. As Season 30 continues, he is focused on enjoying the journey and seeing where music takes him next.
