After years of uncertainty, Coyote vs. Acme is finally getting the big-screen release fans once thought might never happen.

The live-action/animation hybrid, centered on the endlessly unlucky Wile E. Coyote and his battle against the Acme Corporation, was completed by Warner Bros. but shelved in 2023. The studio initially planned to take a tax write-off on the approximately $72 million production, effectively leaving the film without a path to audiences.
That decision sparked an immediate backlash. As word spread that test screenings had received strong reactions, fans and filmmakers rallied behind the movie, calling for Warner Bros. to release it rather than leave it unseen.

The campaign eventually paid off. Ketchup Entertainment acquired the film from Warner Bros. for $50 million, giving Coyote vs. Acme a second chance. Nearly three years after it was originally shelved, the movie is now set to arrive in theaters nationwide on August 28.
The film stars Will Forte as attorney Kevin Avery, who becomes involved when Wile E. Coyote takes legal action against Acme Corporation after its notoriously unreliable products repeatedly backfire. Lana Condor, John Cena, P.J. Byrne, Tone Bell and Martha Kelly also appear, alongside familiar Looney Tunes characters including Road Runner, Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and the Tasmanian Devil.
The long road to release has made the film’s critical reception particularly significant. Reviews began arriving on August 12, and the early response has been overwhelmingly positive. Coyote vs. Acme currently holds a 95% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 40 reviews.
Several critics have highlighted the film’s unusual journey as part of its appeal. Siddhant Adlakha of Joy Sauce described it as a “strange miracle” and an example of the kind of all-ages Hollywood movie that rarely reaches theaters anymore.
Time Out’s Simon Crook praised its energetic comedy, while Deadline’s Pete Hammond called it “a hilarious delight” and one of the strongest live-action/animation hybrids. Collider’s Taylor Gates similarly argued that the film’s difficult journey to theaters ultimately makes its arrival feel even more rewarding.
The enthusiasm is notable because Coyote vs. Acme represents something increasingly unusual in Hollywood: a major studio production that was completed, nearly disappeared, and was ultimately rescued by another distributor because audiences and filmmakers refused to let it vanish.

For now, however, audiences will need to head to theaters to see it. Ketchup Entertainment has not announced an official streaming date, and there is currently no confirmed streaming platform for the movie.
A video-on-demand release is expected eventually, but fans will have to wait for official details. Given the film’s unusual history, there is also hope that it receives a physical-media release, ensuring that its journey does not end with another disappearance into the digital void.
After being shelved, fought for and finally rescued, Coyote vs. Acme is no longer a Hollywood “what if.” Wile E. Coyote is finally getting his moment on the big screen.
