Prince William is reportedly turning down several requests to take part in television projects marking the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, with a royal source claiming he does not want to be placed alongside his brother, Prince Harry.
Diana died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, leaving behind her two young sons, William and Harry. More than three decades later, both brothers continue to honor their mother’s charitable legacy, but they have largely done so separately as their relationship has remained strained.

According to The Times, William has declined requests to appear in documentaries and other TV projects connected to the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death. The report says he is particularly keen to avoid a situation where he and Harry could be “pitted against each other.”

The decision comes as Harry is reportedly considering taking part in, or even creating, a documentary about Diana for the anniversary. Harry has also reportedly spoken with members of his mother’s family, including her brother Charles Spencer, about a possible project.
William has already spoken publicly about Diana’s legacy
William and Harry previously appeared together in the 2017 ITV documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, which marked 20 years since their mother’s death. The brothers shared childhood memories and discussed the difficult period following Diana’s death.
The documentary also touched on their final phone call with their mother, which both brothers later expressed regret about ending so quickly.

At the time, William suggested that they would not speak as openly about Diana publicly again. People close to the Prince of Wales have reportedly described that documentary as a form of “final catharsis,” which may help explain why he is not looking to repeat the experience for the upcoming anniversary.
William and Harry did work together again in 2021 when they unveiled a statue of Diana at Kensington Palace. That has reportedly been their last major joint project connected to their mother.
The brothers’ relationship has remained under public attention for years, particularly since Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as working royals and moved to the United States. Harry and Meghan have since returned to the U.K. for visits, but there has been no confirmed sign of a broader reconciliation between the brothers.

William’s reported decision does not necessarily signal a new escalation. Instead, his choice to stay away from anniversary documentaries could also reflect his previously stated wish to keep his public discussions about Diana limited.
Meanwhile, Harry’s reported interest in a new Diana project could give him another opportunity to speak publicly about his mother’s life and legacy, potentially creating two separate tributes rather than another joint appearance by the brothers.
