Apple TV’s Dark Matter has already moved beyond the events of Blake Crouch’s original novel, and with Season 2 now underway, fans are naturally wondering whether the sci-fi thriller will continue with a third season.
While Apple TV has not officially renewed the series yet, the creative team behind Dark Matter has already mapped out a larger story. According to executive producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, the series was designed as a three-season story, meaning Season 3 could potentially bring the entire saga to an end.

Is ‘Dark Matter’ Season 3 Happening?
There is currently no official Season 3 renewal from Apple TV.
However, the show’s creative team has been planning beyond the second season. Ben-Zekry told ScreenRant that the series was designed as a trilogy when the team pitched Season 2 to Apple.
The goal, she explained, was to tell a complete story across three seasons and eventually bring the series to a satisfying conclusion on the creators’ own terms.
For now, though, the team is focused on Season 2 and hopes viewers will enjoy where the story goes next.
When Could Season 3 Premiere?
It is too early to predict a release date because Apple TV has not yet ordered another season.
The first season premiered on May 8, 2024, and concluded on June 26. Apple renewed the series roughly two months later, but Season 2 did not arrive until two years after the first season.
Season 2 premieres on August 28 and releases new episodes every Friday through October 30.
If a third season follows a similar production schedule, fans could potentially face another lengthy wait. However, no premiere window has been confirmed.
Who Could Return?

Season 2 stars Joel Edgerton as Jason Dessen and Jennifer Connelly as Daniela, alongside Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley and Amanda Brugel.
Exactly who could return for Season 3 will depend on how the second season unfolds. However, Edgerton and Connelly would be the most likely central returning stars if the story continues.
Blake Crouch remains closely involved with the series as creator, showrunner and writer. He also serves as an executive producer alongside Matt Tolmach, Richard Lederer, Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, Edgerton and Connelly.
Crouch and Ben-Zekry co-wrote every episode of Season 2.
What Is ‘Dark Matter’ About?
The series follows Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor and family man whose life is turned upside down when he is abducted into an alternate version of his own reality.
Season 1 explored the consequences of that discovery as Jason attempted to return to his original family and reality, encountering different versions of himself along the way.
Season 2 continues the story as Jason and his family try to establish a peaceful life in a world that appears safe. That stability does not last, however.
Jason’s growing obsession with the Box creates new problems, while Daniela becomes increasingly paranoid and their son Charlie struggles to find stability.
Elsewhere, Amanda and Ryan work together in an attempt to find their way home, while Blair tries to stop Jason and Leighton continues pursuing his vision of creating a perfect world.
With multiple realities and versions of its characters still providing possibilities for new stories, Dark Matter has plenty of material to explore. For now, however, Season 3 remains unconfirmed.
Dark Matter Season 2 premieres August 28 on Apple TV.
