More than a decade after Sons of Anarchy came to an end, several of the FX drama’s most recognizable stars are getting back together for Legends, a new limited series that puts a surprising spin on the cast reunion. Rather than serving as a traditional sequel or another biker-club spinoff, the project takes a meta approach, bringing the actors together in a fictionalized version of the real world.

Set at a fan convention, Legends follows the former Sons of Anarchy stars as they reunite years after the original series ended. The story reportedly blurs the line between their lives and the characters they once played, eventually placing the fractured group in the middle of a real-world threat. Details about that threat remain under wraps, but FX has already teased that additional casting announcements are on the way.

Charlie Hunnam will lead the new project, returning to the center of a story connected to the series that made him a household name among television audiences. Hunnam portrayed Jackson “Jax” Teller throughout Sons of Anarchy, appearing in more than 90 episodes between 2008 and 2014. For Legends, he is taking on responsibilities behind the camera as well, having developed the series for television with Jonathan Groff and serving as an executive producer alongside Groff, Rob McElhenney, Nicholas Frenkel and Jackie Cohn.

Hunnam will also be joined by several major members of the original ensemble. Katey Sagal is returning after playing Gemma Teller Morrow, Jax’s mother and one of the most powerful figures in the original drama. Ron Perlman, who portrayed Clarence “Clay” Morrow, is also part of the reunion.

Maggie Siff is returning as Dr. Tara Knowles-Teller, another character closely connected to Jax’s personal life. Mark Boone Junior will reprise his association with the series as Robert “Bobby Elvis” Munson, while Tommy Flanagan is also returning after playing Filip “Chibs” Telford.

Their reunion is particularly notable because Sons of Anarchy ended its seven-season run in 2014 after chronicling Jax’s struggle to balance fatherhood with his life as a member of an outlaw motorcycle club. The series became one of FX’s defining dramas and later expanded its universe with the spinoff Mayans M.C.

Legends is taking the franchise in a completely different direction. Instead of returning to the fictional world of SAMCRO, the series appears to explore what happens when the actors behind the iconic characters reunite in the real world — only to become caught up in a threat that is far from fictional.

For longtime fans, the project offers a chance to see Hunnam, Sagal, Perlman, Siff, Boone Junior and Flanagan together again, while also introducing a concept that could give the familiar cast a fresh dynamic. With more casting still expected and no premiere date announced, there is plenty that remains unknown about Legends.

For now, one thing is clear: the Sons of Anarchy reunion is happening, but fans should not expect it to look anything like the original series.
