Tom Selleck is officially returning to scripted television following the end of Blue Bloods, and his comeback comes with a familiar face by his side. The actor will guest star in a new Apple TV comedy starring Ted Danson and Elizabeth Banks, marking his first acting role since the long-running CBS police drama concluded in 2024.
The upcoming comedy, which does not yet have a title, comes from Liz Heldens, known for Will Trent, and Matt Ward of Madam Secretary. While details about Selleck’s character are being kept secret, his reunion with Danson adds an extra layer of nostalgia for fans of the two actors.
The series centers on Heidi, played by Banks, a woman attempting to rebuild her life after a messy divorce. Hoping to create a new chapter for herself and her children, Heidi unexpectedly becomes involved in her father’s unusual romantic life at his retirement community. Her efforts to manage his adventures eventually lead her into an unlikely alliance with his girlfriend’s perpetually single son.
Alongside Banks and Danson, the cast includes Rob Delaney, Katey Sagal, Jared Goldstein and Spencer Moss. Hamish Linklater, Michelle Buteau and Simu Liu are also attached to recurring roles.
For Selleck, the project represents his first acting job since Blue Bloods ended its 14-season run on CBS. He played NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan for nearly 300 episodes, becoming the central figure of the family crime drama throughout its run.
The series premiered in 2010 and remained on the air until 2024. During those years, Selleck largely stayed committed to Blue Bloods, taking on relatively few additional acting roles while portraying Frank Reagan.
Selleck has remained closely associated with some of television’s most recognizable characters. Before Blue Bloods, he became famous for playing Thomas Magnum on Magnum, P.I. and later appeared as Dr. Richard Burke on Friends. Earlier in 2026, he was also announced as the narrator of Revolutionary America for the History Channel.
His upcoming comedy reunites him with Danson, with whom he previously appeared in the 1987 film Three Men and a Baby. The two recently crossed paths again when Selleck appeared on Danson’s podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, where they discussed his career and the ending of Blue Bloods.
Selleck has been open about his disappointment over the cancellation of the CBS series. He previously revealed that the cast had agreed to significant financial sacrifices in an effort to keep the show going, including taking a 25% salary cut for its final season.
According to Selleck, the cast remained willing to return after Season 14, but the series ultimately came to an end despite their efforts.
The Blue Bloods universe, however, has continued through Boston Blue, the CBS spinoff starring Donnie Wahlberg and Sonequa Martin-Green. Several former Blue Bloods cast members have already appeared in the new series, including Len Cariou, Bridget Moynahan, Marisa Ramirez and Will Hochman.
Will Estes is also set to appear in Season 2 alongside Ramirez, with the new season premiering October 9. Meanwhile, Boston Blue cast members and creators have expressed interest in bringing Selleck back as Frank Reagan for a possible appearance.
For now, though, Selleck’s next scripted role will take him far away from the Reagan family and New York City police department. His new Apple TV comedy offers the actor a chance to explore a lighter role while reuniting with an old friend.
