HBO’s Lanterns is taking a grounded approach to the Green Lantern mythology, focusing less on cosmic spectacle and more on the relationship between two very different law enforcers. Showrunner Chris Mundy describes the series as “a very human story” about veteran Lantern Hal Jordan and his trainee John Stewart, whose unlikely partnership unfolds against the backdrop of an extraterrestrial investigation.

Kyle Chandler stars as Hal Jordan, a former fighter pilot whose rule-breaking attitude clashes with John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, a disciplined Marine and artist. Their investigation begins after a mass shooting at a Nebraska high school and gradually uncovers a mystery that may extend far beyond Earth.

Rather than treating the Green Lantern Corps as distant superheroes, the series presents them as another form of law enforcement, creating an unusual blend of science fiction and crime drama. Mundy says the creative team deliberately grounded the story in familiar human conflicts, including questions of jurisdiction, professional rivalry and the struggle between an experienced officer and the person who may eventually replace him.

The dynamic between Chandler and Pierre is central to that approach. Mundy praises Chandler’s ability to balance Hal’s abrasive humor with enough charm and empathy to keep the character likable, while Pierre brings a contrasting combination of strength, charisma and quietness to John Stewart.

As the investigation continues, Hal and John begin to develop mutual respect while discovering that the seemingly ordinary Nebraska community hides increasingly disturbing secrets. A conspiracy-minded local, suspicious residents and evidence of a larger interstellar threat push the pair deeper into a mystery where humanity itself may prove more dangerous than the aliens.

The series will still embrace its comic-book roots, with familiar characters and moments of science-fiction spectacle woven into the story. Nathan Fillion is also set to reprise his role as Guy Gardner later in the season.

Lanterns premieres August 16 on HBO and HBO Max, marking another major step in the new DC Universe’s expansion into television.
