Former Great British Baking Show co-host Matt Lucas surprised fans with a dramatically different appearance during a recent TV appearance. The comedian showed off significant weight loss along with a new beard, leaving viewers struggling to recognize the beloved star.

Matt Lucas Debuts a New Beard
Lucas appeared on BBC’s The One Show on August 26, where he chatted with hosts Clara Amfo and JB Gill about his latest projects. The former Great British Baking Show co-host sported a distinctive mustache and goatee that extended below his chin.
“I’m growing this bizarre beard,” Lucas joked when asked about his unusual facial hair.
The comedian explained that the beard is part of his preparation to play Fagin in the upcoming West End production of Oliver. Lucas, who has alopecia, said he decided to stop shaving about seven weeks ago to see how much facial hair he could grow.
Lucas revealed that he lost all his hair when he was six years old. His decision to grow a beard has therefore given fans a rare look at him with facial hair.
Fans React to His Weight Loss
Lucas’ beard wasn’t the only thing that caught viewers’ attention. Fans were also surprised by his significant weight loss, which has transformed his appearance in recent years.
The Little Britain star previously opened up about his weight-loss journey on The Mid•Point with Gabby Logan podcast in 2022. He explained that concerns about his family’s medical history motivated him to make changes to his lifestyle.
Lucas also recalled gaining more weight during the pandemic when he was less active and spent more time at home. After changing his diet, he said he had gone from wearing XXL and sometimes XXXL clothing to a medium.
His latest appearance prompted plenty of reactions on social media, with many viewers saying they barely recognized the star.
“Didn’t recognise Matt Lucas, quite a change since I last seen him. Looking good though,” one X user wrote.
Another fan commented, “A slimmer Matt Lucas looks like a different person.”
What’s Next for Matt Lucas?

Lucas’ new beard will likely remain part of his look as he prepares to take on Fagin in the West End production of Oliver. The role marks another major stage project for the comedian and actor following his years on television.
Lucas is also still fondly remembered by Great British Baking Show viewers for co-hosting the popular baking competition alongside Noel Fielding from 2020 to 2023.
While he may look noticeably different today, his latest appearance proves that Lucas hasn’t lost his trademark sense of humor.
