HBO’s Harry Potter Series Will Feature a Key Moment Missing from the Movies

Harry Potter sits alone in the great hall in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

For a decade, the Harry Potter film series was a cornerstone of Warner Bros.’ success in the early 2000s, coinciding with the release of J.K. Rowling’s final novels, which kept the franchise thriving. The cinematic saga concluded in 2011 with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, marking the end of an era. Warner Bros. soon returned to the Wizarding World with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, an ambitious five-film series scripted by Rowling. While the new films launched strongly, they never matched the monumental success of the original Harry Potter series, ultimately concluding after three installments.

Now, Warner Bros. is taking the franchise back to its roots with a new medium: television. HBO is developing a series adaptation of the original seven novels, aiming to capture moments the films couldn’t include. The announcement has sparked mixed reactions online, with some critics questioning the reboot’s necessity, while devoted book fans are excited about the potential to explore the story more fully. Filming is already underway, and behind-the-scenes glimpses and set photos are giving fans an early preview of what to expect, reaffirming the HBO adaptation as a promising new chapter for the Wizarding World.

The First Harry Potter Film Opened Differently From the Book

Dumbledore and McGonagall place Harry on the Dursley's doorstep in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Chris Columbus’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone remains one of the most faithful film adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s work, partly because the story’s length was more manageable. Even so, certain parts of the first novel had to be omitted; for example, the film opens slightly later than the book’s very first chapter.

After the iconic Warner Bros. logo, the movie begins on Privet Drive, where Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall discuss Harry’s fate following the death of his parents and Voldemort’s initial defeat. This now-famous scene introduces audiences to the Wizarding World and hints at Harry’s importance to witches and wizards everywhere. Rubeus Hagrid soon arrives on Sirius Black’s flying motorbike, carrying baby Harry, and leaves him on the doorstep of the Dursleys—his only remaining family—still bearing the lightning-shaped scar from the previous night’s tragic events.

The film’s opening closely mirrors the book, and it’s likely the upcoming HBO series will include these iconic moments, such as Dumbledore using his Deluminator and McGonagall reverting from her cat form. However, the series will need to clarify from the outset that it isn’t a shot-for-shot remake of the films. By adhering more closely to the source material, the show can honor the novels while still offering a fresh perspective for viewers.

HBO’s Harry Potter Series Will Feature Vernon Dudley’s Book Introduction

The Dursley Family holding Harry's letter from Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone 2001

After Harry’s parents die, he is placed with the Dursleys. In the 2001 film, the story quickly jumps to years later, showing the family mistreating him. The book, however, introduces readers to the Wizarding World in a different way. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone begins from Vernon Dursley’s perspective as he encounters a series of strange magical occurrences during his day: a cat reading a map, people wandering around in colorful robes, and overheard conversations about the Potters and their son. Vernon tries to dismiss these oddities—until he meets Dedalus Diggle at lunch, who, despite being a Muggle, excitedly tells him about Voldemort’s downfall.

Set photos and behind-the-scenes glimpses from HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series suggest that this scene will be faithfully recreated. Though brief, it signals how closely the adaptation is following the novels. It also provides a fresh introduction for viewers familiar only with the films. By starting with Vernon, the show invites audiences into the Wizarding World through a Muggle perspective, rather than immediately presenting the most powerful wizards.

HBO’s Harry Potter Series May Expand the Story As Well

Beyond revisiting moments that didn’t make it into the films, the HBO series has the chance to expand the Wizarding World in new ways. Early casting announcements suggest this will be the case: Lucius Malfoy and Cornelius Fudge are set to appear in the first season, even though they were introduced later in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Additionally, recent behind-the-scenes footage hints at appearances from James and Lily Potter, played by actors yet to be announced.

One video shows the Potters holding hands, while another hints at more action than the original film portrayed. In the Sorcerer’s Stone movie, the flashback depicting the night of James and Lily’s deaths is brief, featuring quick glimpses of the couple and a cloaked Voldemort. Fans hope the HBO series will offer an expanded version of this pivotal night, perhaps including an action sequence that shows the Potters in greater depth and gives a stronger introduction to Voldemort’s deadly magic.

Previously, James and Lily were seen only through Harry’s limited interactions with magical artifacts like the Mirror of Erised and the Resurrection Stone. By showing more of that fateful night, the HBO series can make them more fully realized characters, deepening the emotional impact of their deaths on Harry throughout his Hogwarts years.

The Harry Potter films were masterpieces, bringing Rowling’s world to life with brilliant actors, stunning production design, and iconic music. While some fans questioned the need to revisit the story, others saw the potential to explore aspects of the books that were left out. The films captured the spirit of the novels, but many details and moments never made it to the screen. HBO’s series offers a chance to tell a more comprehensive story, enriching the universe further.

Having more time to draw from the novels was a key motivator behind the HBO adaptation, alongside the obvious financial benefits. The series will need to convince audiences that revisiting this story is worthwhile. Early set photos indicate that the show will remain true to the 1990s setting of the books and include scenes the films skipped, such as Vernon encountering a wizard before taking in Harry. While the first season may not feel drastically different from the films, it’s clear from filming so far that the HBO adaptation will incorporate additional details and scenes, reassuring viewers that it won’t simply be a retelling of the blockbuster movies.
