Beyond Outlander: Caitríona Balfe Dishes on Post-Show Chaos, High-Altitude Filming, and Her Ultimate Luxury Travel Secrets!

For over a decade, millions of devoted fans across the globe knew her exclusively as the fierce, time-traveling combat medic Claire Fraser in the cultural phenomenon Outlander. Spanning eight seasons, 101 explosive episodes—including one entirely directed by Balfe herself—multiple prestigious awards, and four Golden Globe Best Actress nominations, wrapping up the hit series in 2024 felt like the definitive end of an era. But as the Irish powerhouse actor proves, closing one epic chapter was merely the launchpad for a thrilling new global conquest.

Stepping straight out of the Scottish Highlands and into a whirlwind of elite cinematic projects, Balfe admits she initially thought life after a long-running TV schedule would offer peaceful, slow-paced downtime. “I thought that once you’re out of the TV schedule, work comes in peaks and valleys, and you just have more time,” she shares with a knowing, playful smile. Instead, she dove headfirst into a star-studded slate of new roles, including bringing Mrs. Dashwood to life in director Georgia Oakley’s fresh, highly anticipated feature film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.

From Recession-Era Ireland to Global Modeling Runways: The Making of an Adventurer

Balfe’s natural affinity for a fast-paced, globetrotting lifestyle didn’t happen by accident. Growing up in Ireland during the economic recession of the 1980s, international travel simply wasn’t on the table. “I never left Ireland until I was 17,” she reveals, recalling how her childhood summers were instead spent exploring the windswept coastal beaches of remote Donegal in the northwest—memories she still cherishes above all others.

Everything changed overnight when she was scouted by a modeling agency, instantly thrusting her into a perpetual suitcase-living reality as she bounced between Tokyo, Milan, Paris, and New York. Her three-month modeling stint in Japan during her late teens served as an intense, high-stakes baptism by fire. Thrust into a completely foreign culture without knowing a word of the language, and armed with little more than hand-drawn maps to navigate her way to 6 a.m. photo shoots, she mastered the art of fierce independence. “I was thrown right in at the deep end,” she reflects.

When she transitioned into acting, her travel rhythm shifted dramatically. Instead of churning through airports every few days, she began embedding herself in foreign landscapes for months at a time. Her 11-year stint filming Outlander across Perthshire, West Lothian, and Fife completely rewired her relationship with nature, bonding her soul to Scotland’s misty lochs, ancient forests, and towering Munros. “I don’t think I realized how much that gave me,” she says. “Now I really crave it.”

Conquering Everest and High-Altitude Revelations in Tenzing

That profound appreciation for majestic terrain deeply influenced Balfe’s latest cinematic ventures. This autumn, she stars alongside Genden Phuntsok, Tom Hiddleston, and Willem Dafoe in Tenzing, a gripping historical drama chronicling the epic 1953 ascent of Mount Everest by legendary Nepalese mountaineer Tenzing Norgay.

The film tackles complex, modern conversations about what true adventure means today. Pointing out the stark commercialization of the world’s tallest peak, Balfe notes, “There’s such a reckoning happening within the climbing community about what it means to conquer Mount Everest. A line in the film explains how, within Nepali philosophy, it should be approached the way ‘a child climbs into a mother’s lap,’ but you see Base Camp now and it’s like Fyre Festival.”

Returning to Nepal for the production—a country she first visited 25 years ago as a young backpacker—offered an unexpectedly personal homecoming. Though her character’s storyline remained rooted in Kathmandu rather than up the treacherous mountain slopes, she spent three weeks uncovering a vibrant, modern side of the city. “I discovered these incredible coffee shops and yoga studios and beautiful design stores run by young Nepalis,” she beams.

Muddy Moors and Elemental Drama in Sense and Sensibility

Farther west, Balfe’s journey took her through the wind-swept moors and elemental landscapes of Kent, Dorset, and Dartmoor National Park for Sense and Sensibility. Addressing skeptics who question why the classic Jane Austen tale needed another screen retelling, Balfe argues passionately: “People always ask, ‘Why do another Sense and Sensibility?’ But I think every generation gets to meet these stories where they are.”

Praising Georgia Oakley’s distinct artistic vision, Balfe recalls the raw, grounded atmosphere of the shoot—battling howling winds, plucking wild blackberries along overgrown hedgerows, and dodging unpredictable rainstorms. Their fictional home, Barton Cottage, served as an emotional anchor for the entire cast. “The whole production was like this poetic hug, earthy and grounded,” she laughs.

Behind Closed Doors: Inside Balfe’s Ultra-Exclusive Hotel Hotspots and Travel Secrets

Taking a glamorous break from period costumes to model the latest fall collections on the sun-drenched grounds of Oxfordshire’s sprawling Estelle Manor, Balfe opened up about her actual travel habits, luxury hotel preferences, and how becoming a mother to her young son completely overhauled her vacation priorities.

Sharing her thoughts on Estelle Manor, she confesses, “I’ve been a few times now. It’s beautiful, obviously, but it also works for families. My son absolutely loved it, although he wasn’t happy that children were only allowed in the pool for three hours each day! Once you have children, your priorities change. I’m always trying to find somewhere that has a separate bedroom and living room, so we can put him to bed and not be stuck sitting in the dark. Open-plan suites just don’t work. And then sometimes with a villa, I just want to be able to call down and get room service.”

When reminiscing about her Scottish filming days, Balfe revealed her go-to Scottish hideaways: “When we were in Scotland, we used to go to Gleneagles Hotel. Then there’s Inver, on Loch Fyne, which is tiny but incredible. You’re off-grid with no TV, no phone reception. I love that they leave a record player and a cocktail for you in your room. My husband and I went there when my son was one. We were only away for 48 hours, but it felt like a whole week.”

As a London resident, she holds a special spot in her heart for the city’s timeless icons. “I don’t think you can beat Claridge’s. Recently I was doing a press junket there, and then it just so happened that our boiler broke at home. So then we had to stay for two nights, which was really such a trial [laughs].” For casual weekend getaways, she frequently heads down to Somerset, where she and her husband tied the knot near Bruton, splitting time between Babington House and the ultra-trendy Newt in Somerset—though securing a reservation requires planning months in advance.

Internationally, her travel map stretches from Mexican coastal paradises like Careyes and Cuixmala to the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast staying at Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa, and the quieter, family-friendly corners of Ibiza around Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera.

The Ultimate Digital Detox and Packing Essentials

Despite a high-flying career that demands constant movement, Balfe guards her personal transit time fiercely. “Airports have gotten less and less fun, but I see traveling as my alone time. I love getting on a plane with a good book. I never use the Wi-Fi. I don’t want to connect, and I don’t understand people who do. That’s your one moment.”

As for packing essentials, her strategy is delightfully optimistic: “Books. I don’t always read. They go in anyway though, with great optimism. And a swimsuit. If I can get a dip somewhere, that’s a huge recharge.” Whether she’s racing into the icy Cornish sea after wrapping historical drama The Housekeeper or diving into the Mediterranean heat after a grueling day in costume, cold water immersion is her ultimate reset button.

The Dream Escape: Unplugging in Donegal

Looking toward her ultimate fantasy vacation, Balfe dreams of absolute isolation and zero digital connectivity. “There’s always somebody trying to get hold of me, but if I say, ‘Look, I’m away for these dates,’ the phones generally stop. My dream holiday is going to Donegal in the summer with friends, staying in a little hundred-year-old farmhouse on an island. The kids can run around. I can switch my phone off and have three or four days. If I can find a yoga instructor who’ll come to the house every day, I’ll be so happy. If I can get a chef, too, that’s perfect. I really don’t want to have to think about what I’m feeding everybody!”
