Tom Jones has revealed that a recent battle with pneumonia left him fearing he might not survive. The 86-year-old singer opened up about the frightening experience during his return to the stage in Los Angeles, just over a week after illness forced him to postpone two California concerts.
While addressing the audience, Jones explained that he had initially mistaken his symptoms for the flu before his condition became serious enough to require emergency medical attention. He was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, where doctors treated him for pneumonia.
“I thought, ‘This was it. You had a wonderful life, Tommy, but it’s over now,’” Jones recalled, according to the New York Post. He also described the moment paramedics were called because he was struggling to breathe, saying, “I can’t breathe.”
The singer spent two days in the intensive care unit before remaining in the hospital for several more days. Reflecting on the treatment he received, Jones praised the medical team at UCLA.
“UCLA did a wonderful job, so I’m here,” he told the crowd.
His recovery also brought an unmistakable reminder of what he wanted to do next. When doctors asked what he hoped to do as his health improved, Jones reportedly had a clear answer: “I have to get back on the stage, that’s where I belong.”

Tom Jones Returns to the Stage After Hospitalization
Jones began his return to live performances in San Diego on November 3, marking his first concert since the health scare. He followed that appearance with a performance in Los Angeles the next night.
The concerts came after the singer announced that he needed to postpone his scheduled Los Angeles and San Diego shows. At the time, he described his illness as a bad case of the flu.
“I’ve had a great time these last few weeks, completing 20 shows and singing for wonderful audiences across the USA, but unexpectedly I’ve been hit with a bad case of the flu,” he said in his initial statement.

He also apologized to fans for the inconvenience caused by the postponements, adding, “I’m truly sorry for any inconvenience caused. I look forward to seeing you all soon.”
Both postponed concerts have since been rescheduled and completed.
A History of Health Challenges
The recent pneumonia battle is not the first time Jones has faced health problems that affected his performance schedule.
In 2022, he underwent a second hip replacement. That same year, he developed viral laryngitis, forcing him to reschedule a concert. In 2025, an upper respiratory infection led to another postponed performance.
Despite these setbacks, Jones has continued to maintain an active touring career. His Come Gather Round Tour has taken him across 11 countries for 22 shows during its U.K. leg.
The North American leg began in September and concluded with his Los Angeles concert, bringing the latest stretch of his tour to an end.

After an experience that left him fearing the worst, Jones’s return to the stage carries particular significance. His determination to perform again reflects how central live music remains to his life, even after a serious health scare.
