American Idol is preparing to celebrate a major milestone with a primetime anniversary special looking back at the competition’s journey from a television experiment to one of the most influential shows in pop culture.
When the singing competition premiered in 2002, it quickly became a television sensation, changing the music industry by giving viewers the power to vote for aspiring performers. The series helped launch the careers of several major artists, including its inaugural winner, Kelly Clarkson, and Season 4 champion Carrie Underwood.
Now approaching its 25th season, American Idol will mark the occasion with a special currently carrying the working title American Idol at 25. ABC, which revived the series in 2018 following its cancellation by FOX and a two-year hiatus, will air the retrospective shortly before the next competition season begins.
When Will American Idol at 25 Premiere?
American Idol at 25 is scheduled to premiere Monday, February 1, 2027, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. The broadcast will arrive one week before the launch of the show’s 25th season.
Viewers will also be able to stream the special on Hulu the day after its television premiere.

Which American Idol Contestants Found Success Without Winning?
Winning the competition is not the only path to a lasting career. Jennifer Hudson, who finished seventh in her season, went on to achieve EGOT status, earning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
Her awards include an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Dreamgirls, a Grammy for her album Jennifer Hudson and another for The Color Purple‘s musical theater recording. She also won a Daytime Emmy as an executive producer of Baba Yaga and a Tony as a co-producer of A Strange Loop. Hudson has since become the host of her own talk show.
Other notable non-winners include Chris Daughtry, a finalist in Season 5 who found multiplatinum success with his rock band Daughtry, and Adam Lambert, the Season 8 runner-up. Lambert has built a solo career and later became the lead singer of Queen, taking on the role previously held by the late Freddie Mercury.
Who Hosts and Judges American Idol?
Ryan Seacrest has been closely associated with American Idol since its debut. The first season featured two hosts, Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman, but Dunkleman left after that season. Seacrest has hosted the competition on his own ever since.
The judging panel, meanwhile, has changed considerably over the years.
The original panel featured Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, who remained together through the first seven seasons. Kara DioGuardi joined them in Season 8, followed by Ellen DeGeneres in Season 9. Later judges included Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr.
When the show returned on ABC in 2018, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan became its judging trio. Carrie Underwood replaced Perry in Season 23, and the panel continued with Richie, Underwood and Bryan in Season 24.
