Miles Heizer, the cover star of The Advocate‘s November/December issue, discussed his lead role as Cameron Cope on Netflix’s Boots and explained why this cast of actors actually developed a deeper bond that went beyond filming the show.

“I think something that a lot of queer people go through — I certainly did, growing up — where it was like I had this secret that no one knew, even my closest friends,” Heizer told The Advocate, a sister publication to Out. “And of course, once I finally came out to them, they could not have possibly cared less.”

The actor, who was previously known for his performances in ParenthoodNerve13 Reasons Why, and Love, Simon, explained that he did not expect to come out of filming Boost having a “brotherhood.”

“My first male friends were on this show,” Heizer revealed. “I only had female friends growing up. I was nervous around boys because I was scared they’d see I was gay. … I realized we all want the same things: to be happy, laugh at stupid videos, and connect.”

Heizer went on, “By the end of filming, we had known each other for almost two years…I think we ended up having a very similar experience to the characters in the show.”

Greg Cope White — author of The Pink Marine memoir that inspired Boots — chimed in on Heizer’s experience being similar to his experiences at the U.S. Marine Corps. “There’s a saying that we say in the Marines: ‘When we march, it’s 70 boots hitting the ground at one time, but one heartbeat.’”

“I told that to the boys [in the series],” White said. “They got it. They felt it.”

Boots is now streaming on Netflix.
