The Lowdown is officially returning for Season 2, and FX is bringing Ethan Hawke’s Tulsa-based mystery drama back with a new case, new faces and plenty of unresolved family tension.

The noir series, created by Reservation Dogs co-creator Sterlin Harjo, will premiere its second season on Wednesday, October 14, at 9/8c on FX and Hulu. International viewers will also be able to watch the series on Disney+. Season 2 will consist of eight new episodes, with one episode arriving each Wednesday.
Hawke returns as Lee Raybon, Tulsa’s self-described “truthstorian,” following his investigation into the mysterious death of Dale Washberg in Season 1. This time, Lee finds himself pulled into an entirely different mystery when public defender Ginger, played by Betty Gilpin, asks for his help after one of her clients mysteriously disappears from a state penitentiary.
The new case, however, will not be Lee’s only problem.

Season 2 introduces a major development in Lee’s personal life with the arrival of his estranged father, played by Oscar-winning actor Tommy Lee Jones. The reunion is complicated by the fact that Lee previously told his daughter, Francis, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, that her grandfather had died years earlier.
That revelation promises to bring another layer of tension to a series already built around secrets, investigations and complicated family relationships.
Meanwhile, Keith David’s Marty takes on a new responsibility at the Heartland Press, becoming the publication’s managing editor. His promotion adds another storyline to the upcoming season as the newspaper continues to serve as an important part of Lee’s world.
Alongside Hawke, David and Armstrong, returning cast members include Kaniehtiio Horn, Rafael Casal and Michael Hitchcock.
The second season is also expanding its ensemble with several notable additions. In addition to Jones and Gilpin, Austin Amelio, Martha Plimpton and Clifton Collins Jr. are joining the cast in undisclosed roles.

The new chapter continues Harjo’s approach of treating each season as its own story. While the characters and world remain connected, Season 2 will introduce a fresh mystery rather than simply extending the investigation from the first season.
Harjo previously said he hoped the series could continue for several seasons, with each one functioning as an individual chapter. Hawke has similarly described the creative goal as telling stories with satisfying beginnings, middles and endings while still leaving audiences eager to discover what happens next.
That structure could give The Lowdown room to evolve without losing the distinctive atmosphere and character-driven storytelling established in its first season.
For Season 2, the combination of a new mystery, Lee’s complicated relationship with his father and the arrival of Gilpin’s character suggests that the series is expanding beyond its investigative roots.
With Hawke once again leading the charge and Tommy Lee Jones entering Lee’s increasingly complicated world, The Lowdown is heading into its second season with plenty of questions waiting to be answered.
