Nikki Jefferson has made it clear that her relationship with Shawn Best is over — and she has no interest in reopening that door.
The Married at First Sight Season 20 couple ended their marriage on Decision Day following repeated conflicts, and their tense reunion did little to change Nikki’s mind. In a post-reunion interview with Swooon, Nikki revealed that Shawn attempted to contact her afterward, but she chose not to respond.
“I feel like I didn’t really need closure,” Nikki explained. “I got closure on Decision Day, and I feel committed about my decision.”

Nikki reflects on why the marriage failed
From the beginning of Season 20, Nikki was open about the fact that Shawn was not initially her physical type. Still, as their relationship developed, she came to understand why the experts had paired them.
She pointed to their shared career ambitions, strong personalities, sense of community and mutual desire for marriage as some of the qualities that made the match understandable. Their similar backgrounds and experiences also gave them meaningful points of connection throughout the experiment.
However, Nikki ultimately felt that the differences that mattered most were harder to assess before the marriage began.
She cited their communication styles, expectations surrounding gender roles and marriage, as well as the way they handled conflict and attempted to repair their relationship, as major areas of incompatibility.
Those issues continued to surface throughout the season, even after the couple appeared to make progress following a meeting with matchmaker and couples’ therapist Paul C. Brunson.
Nikki said that improvement was genuine. For a period of time, she and Shawn were able to use the tools they had learned, pay closer attention to each other and enjoy a stretch of harmony.
“It was legitimate,” she said of that improvement.
But the progress ultimately wasn’t enough to overcome their deeper problems.
Nikki addresses Shawn’s “wifely duty” comment

One of the most contentious moments of their marriage involved Shawn’s comments about intimacy and what he described as a wife’s “duty.”
Shawn later insisted that he would never have told Nikki that it was her “wifely duty” to please him. Nikki, however, said she did not believe his explanation.
She recalled being certain that Shawn had characterized intimacy as something similar to a “wifely duty.” When the scene later aired, she noted that the exact wording appeared in a slightly different order, but she maintained that the underlying meaning was essentially the same.
For Nikki, seeing the footage was significant because it allowed viewers to hear what had actually been said rather than relying solely on the conflicting accounts.
After the episode aired on August 6, Shawn posted an apology on Instagram on August 10. In the since-deleted post, he apologized for having “gaslit [his] wife” and acknowledged that he had tried to backtrack rather than take responsibility for what he said.
Nikki said she saw the apology and appreciated the effort, but she remained uncertain about its sincerity.
For her, an apology is only meaningful if it reflects genuine personal growth.
“I think it’s a matter of really internalizing what was wrong and becoming a better person,” she said. “And I hope that for him.”
Shawn reached out after the reunion
The Season 20 reunion marked the first conversation Nikki and Shawn had shared since their split. That meant Shawn’s public apology had come before he personally apologized to her.
Their reunion appearance also brought another confrontation, this time involving Nikki’s mother. Shawn had not met her during filming, and Nikki’s mother told him that she felt he had disrespected her daughter.
Nikki said Shawn offered her mother what she considered a “half-hearted apology” before criticizing Nikki over decisions involving her family during the experiment.
She had hoped the reunion would be more civil from beginning to end, especially because she felt she had grown during and after the show. Still, she said his behavior did not surprise her.
After the reunion, Shawn attempted to reach out to Nikki directly. She ultimately decided against having a conversation.
“I got closure on Decision Day, and I feel committed about my decision,” she said, explaining that the lack of trust between them made reopening communication unnecessary.
Nikki also made it clear that she isn’t looking for a post-show friendship or trying to repair their relationship publicly.
“Why open the door when it’s closed?” she asked.
Nikki is still hopeful about love

Despite the difficult experience, Nikki said she has been doing well since leaving the show.
She revealed that she has been living her life, has gone on a couple of dates and still believes she will eventually find the right person. Nothing has developed into a lasting relationship yet, but she remains hopeful about marriage.
Looking back at her experience, Nikki said she has also learned more about herself. One of her biggest realizations was that she can be both strong and soft, while maintaining boundaries and protecting her peace even during difficult circumstances.
She was also surprised by the response from viewers, particularly women who connected with her story and saw parts of themselves in her experience.
Nikki said she hopes to eventually create a space where women can have difficult conversations, support one another and learn from each other.
