‘Lioness’ Stars Unpack the Fallout From That Attack

The latest episode of Lioness picks up in the immediate aftermath of Joe McNamara’s shocking attack, as her team races to uncover who is behind the kidnapping and what they ultimately want from her.

Season 3, Episode 2, titled “No Sorrow Like the Survivor,” finds Joe fighting to survive after being taken captive. Her attackers are convinced that a tracking device has been implanted somewhere on her body, and their search quickly turns brutal. Joe eventually gives them false information about the location of the device, buying herself a chance to trigger a rescue.

By the time Two Cups, Bobby and Cruz arrive, however, Joe is already gone. All they find is the beacon, leaving the team with few answers and a growing sense of urgency.

The situation becomes even more complicated for Joe’s family. Her husband, Neal, is desperate to protect their children from the reality of what has happened. When he sees Joe’s damaged car, he insists that Kaitlyn Meade’s team hide it before the children can see it.

For Dave Annable, who plays Neal, the moment reveals how deeply his character is struggling to separate his role as a father from the dangerous world surrounding his wife.

“He’s still a father,” Annable explained, describing Neal’s attempt to shield his daughter from seeing her mother’s wrecked car. He also praised the confrontation between Neal and Kaitlyn, saying it allowed audiences to see a more direct and personal side of his character.

The episode also gives viewers a closer look at Cruz’s relationship with Josie. After returning home from another difficult day, Cruz discovers that Josie has prepared a very different kind of welcome for her.

Laysla De Oliveira said the relationship works because both women understand what the other has experienced through the Lioness program. Unlike Cruz’s previous relationship, this one allows her to be more open and vulnerable.

At the same time, the investigation surrounding Joe continues to expand. After the attack on her home, members of Joe’s team disguise themselves as FBI agents while examining the scene. Their search eventually leads them to another person monitoring the response from a nearby rooftop.

Joe also begins to understand just how close she came to being killed. While trapped with her children, she explains that she believes she was specifically targeted. She realizes that she could have been killed if she had followed her normal routine after returning home rather than stopping to have a drink.

The growing threat soon becomes an international confrontation.

In Washington, D.C., Byron Westfield comes face-to-face with a Russian operative. Furious over the attack and the involvement of foreign agents, Byron makes it clear that the United States will respond.

Michael Kelly, who plays Byron, said the confrontation was particularly enjoyable because it showed a more emotional side of the character. While Byron may have gone further than he should have, Kelly believes the circumstances made his reaction understandable.

The actor also suggested that Byron’s threats could have consequences moving forward. As the deputy director of the CIA, Byron has significant influence, but his authority is not unlimited. That tension could become increasingly important as the conflict escalates.

Meanwhile, Joe develops her own theory about who may be responsible. She suspects a Ukrainian double agent she encountered previously could be connected to the attempted attack on her home.

Kyle responds by taking matters into his own hands, setting up another dangerous confrontation.

By the end of the episode, Joe finally returns home and speaks with Neal about what happened. She also reveals the latest development in her investigation: by killing the people who tried to attack her, she may have unintentionally confirmed her identity to the people behind the operation.

With Joe back home but the mystery far from solved, Lioness continues to widen the conflict beyond a single kidnapping. The attack has put Joe, her family and the entire team under increasing pressure, while new international players appear to be entering the game.

The question now is not only who took Joe, but how far they are willing to go to find her — and what Joe will do once she discovers the truth.

Lioness airs Sundays on Paramount+.
