Kathleen Robertson is the latest familiar face to join Reacher, taking on the role of Elsbeth Sampson, a fiercely protective political spouse whose ambitions are closely tied to her husband’s career. While Robertson is new to the world of Reacher, the actress has spent decades building a television career, first gaining widespread recognition as Clare Arnold on Beverly Hills, 90210.

Robertson makes her debut as Elsbeth in Season 4, Episode 2, “Cage Fight.” She plays the wife of Congressman John Sampson, portrayed by Marc Blucas. When Reacher arranges a meeting with the congressman at the National Mall, Elsbeth arrives alongside Sampson’s head of security rather than allowing her husband to attend alone.
The character quickly establishes herself as a formidable presence. Elsbeth is deeply protective of her husband, his political career and the future they envision together. With Sampson pursuing greater political ambitions, including a potential path to the White House, Elsbeth appears determined to stand beside him and protect their shared interests.

For longtime television viewers, however, Robertson may be better remembered for her breakthrough role on Beverly Hills, 90210. She joined the popular 1990s teen drama as Clare Arnold, the intelligent and outspoken daughter of California University Chancellor Arnold. Clare eventually became an important member of the show’s central group and was involved in several major storylines, including romantic relationships with Steve Sanders and Brandon Walsh.
Robertson’s other television and film credits include Scary Movie 2, Boss, Bates Motel and The Fixer. More recently, she appeared on Tracker as Maxine, a successful attorney.
Despite the success 90210 brought her, Robertson has said her experience on the series was far from comfortable. Speaking on The Slice of Life Show by Pete Ferriero, she recalled entering the production concerned that the role could lead to typecasting and make it difficult to move forward professionally.

“It was horribly difficult,” Robertson said, describing the environment as far from welcoming. She recalled experiencing bullying early in her time on the series, including an incident in which Polaroid photographs of her were reportedly cut in half and left in the makeup trailer.
Robertson said the experience contributed to her decision to leave the show. She explained that she felt it was “scary” to stay because of concerns about being typecast.
However, she emphasized that her experience was not universally negative. Robertson singled out Tori Spelling as particularly welcoming when she first joined the cast, while noting that some other actors also made an effort to make her feel comfortable.
Robertson ultimately moved beyond her 90210 years, taking on a range of roles across television and film. Her latest appearance on Reacher adds another high-profile series to that career and gives longtime viewers another opportunity to see the actress in a very different role from the one that first made her famous.
Reacher Season 4 airs Wednesdays on Prime Video.
