Netflix has unveiled the first photos from its highly anticipated adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, offering viewers a first look at Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist and the rest of the cast bringing the American classic to life.

The seven-episode limited series is based on Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, a sweeping story inspired by the biblical tale of Cain and Abel. Set in California’s Salinas Valley across the years between the Civil War and World War I, the adaptation follows two generations of the troubled Trask family as ambition, jealousy and family conflict shape their lives.
Mike Faist stars as Charles Trask, with Christopher Abbott portraying his brother, Adam. The brothers sit at the heart of the family’s complicated history, which later continues through Adam’s twin sons, Cal and Aron, played by Joseph Zada and Joe Anders.
Pugh takes on one of the story’s most complex characters, Cathy Ames, Adam’s wife. Described as manipulative and evasive, Cathy becomes a disruptive force within the Trask family, setting off conflicts that ripple across generations.
The newly released images offer glimpses of Cathy alongside both Adam and Charles, while also introducing key figures including Ciarán Hinds’ Samuel Hamilton and Hoon Lee’s Lee. The photos hint at the period setting and the intense relationships that will drive the adaptation.
Behind the series is writer and executive producer Zoe Kazan, who has taken on the ambitious task of adapting Steinbeck’s entire story. Kazan has emphasized her desire to explore elements of the novel that previous screen versions did not fully capture.
The project also carries a personal connection for Kazan. Her grandfather, acclaimed filmmaker Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation of East of Eden, starring James Dean. Rather than revisiting that version, the Netflix series aims to offer a broader interpretation of Steinbeck’s novel.

Kazan has said that the new adaptation remains rooted in the source material while delving into themes including generational trauma, free will and the concept of humanity’s fall from grace.
With its sprawling timeline and ensemble cast, the series is positioned as a more expansive exploration of the Trask family than previous adaptations. The first-look photos suggest a drama built around both intimate family tensions and the larger forces shaping the characters’ lives.
East of Eden is set to premiere October 1 on Netflix, giving audiences their first opportunity to see Pugh, Abbott, Faist and the ensemble bring Steinbeck’s enduring family saga to the screen.
