After 26 years of blindsides, alliances, evictions and unexpected twists, Big Brother has reached a milestone few television shows ever achieve: its 1,000th episode.
The CBS reality competition celebrated the historic occasion on August 27 with a special 90-minute live episode, officially earning two Guinness World Records. The series is now recognized as the first primetime television show to reach 1,000 episodes and the competitive reality TV show with the most episodes.
Guinness World Records Official Adjudicator Michael Empric appeared during the milestone broadcast to present the certificates to longtime host Julie Chen Moonves.
“Throughout our many summers producing Big Brother, we never thought we’d reach 1,000 episodes – let alone achieve not one but TWO Guinness World Records titles!” executive producers Allison Grodner, Rich Meehan and Chris Roach said in a statement.
The producers credited the show’s dedicated viewers and hardworking crew for making the achievement possible, calling the milestone an “incredible honor” after more than two decades on television.

A Night Celebrating 26 Years of ‘Big Brother’
The 1,000th episode looked back at some of the most memorable moments from Big Brother’s 26-year history while still delivering the drama fans have come to expect from the franchise.
Former Houseguests made surprise appearances throughout the celebration, including Chelsie Baham, Dan Gheesling, Britney Haynes and Kaysar Ridha. Their participation was determined through interactive fan voting, giving viewers a direct role in shaping the special episode.
The milestone celebration also included an eviction, ensuring that the historic episode remained firmly connected to the competition at the heart of the series.
The Biggest Twist Yet Takes Over Season 28
The celebration also marked the beginning of what the show is calling its biggest twist of the summer.
Following the 1,000th episode, the Houseguests were transported back to the year 1000, where four Big Brother legends — Britney Haynes, Tiffany Mitchell, Keanu Soto and Cody Calafiore — took control of the game and prepared to challenge the remaining contestants in an unprecedented way.
For this special twist, the familiar structure of the game has been thrown out. There will be no Head of Household, Power of Veto or Blockbuster competition, although one Houseguest will still fail to make it to the next live eviction.
Fans will have to wait until the Sunday episode to learn exactly how the twist unfolds, with the show’s live feeds temporarily going offline until after the broadcast.

A Record-Breaking Era Continues
Season 28 is already one of the most expansive seasons in Big Brother history. The show is airing more programming hours than it has since its debut, including 90-minute Wednesday episodes and biweekly installments of Big Brother: Unlocked.
Reaching 1,000 episodes is particularly remarkable for a franchise that has remained a summer television staple for more than two decades. For the producers, the achievement is ultimately a reflection of the fans who have continued to follow the show season after season.
“It really speaks to the passionate and dedicated fanbase who have grown with us over the 26 years,” the producers said, while also recognizing the talented crew responsible for bringing each season to life.
With two Guinness World Records now attached to its name, Big Brother has officially entered a new chapter — and, true to the show’s motto, fans can still expect the unexpected.
Big Brother Season 28 airs Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8/7c on CBS.
