Maria Doyle Kennedy Reflects on the Isolating Challenge of Portraying Jocasta Cameron in ‘Outlander’

Irish actress and singer Maria Doyle Kennedy, known to Outlander viewers for her performance as Jocasta Cameron—Jamie Fraser’s formidable aunt—has shared insights into the physical and emotional adjustments required to portray a sight-impaired character in the hit historical drama series.

Kennedy joined the cast of the Starz drama during its fourth season, introducing audiences to the mistress of River Run, the North Carolina plantation where significant portions of the narrative unfold. Prior to filming, Kennedy conducted extensive preparation to understand the physical traits and movements of a sight-impaired person living in the 18th century. However, the true psychological weight of the role became fully apparent on her very first day of shooting alongside co-star Sam Heughan, who portrays Jamie Fraser.

In an interview with the Canadian radio station The Grand 101.1 FM, Kennedy recounted the realization that struck her during her inaugural scene. She noted that while she had methodically planned the physical mechanics of the character, she had not fully anticipated the social and performance isolation caused by the complete lack of eye contact with fellow actors.

“I suddenly realised I was not going to make eye contact with anybody for the whole season,” Kennedy recalled. “I was overwhelmed with a feeling of loneliness, because it’s just something I hadn’t really processed before.”

Kennedy explained that human interaction relies heavily on non-verbal communication conveyed through eye contact. Actors typically read intentions, emotional shifts, and narrative cues by observing their scene partners’ eyes. Deprived of this primary acting tool, she had to adapt her performance style, relying more heavily on physical presence, vocal inflection, and tactile awareness to connect with other characters on screen.

Beyond her work as an actor, Kennedy has maintained a distinguished parallel career as a singer-songwriter. Over several decades, she has released numerous solo folk and indie albums—including Mug (1998) and Sing (2012)—while collaborating with prominent Irish and international musicians. Her dual background in music and dramatic performance has made her a prominent figure in Irish cultural arts.

Since her debut in 2018, Kennedy’s portrayal of Jocasta Cameron has remained a key focal point across multiple seasons of Outlander, earning praise for capturing both the personal grief and political authority defining the matriarch of River Run.
