Bridgerton fans may need to prepare for a major shift when Season 5 arrives, as one of the show’s most beloved characters is expected to take a significant step back.
Nicola Coughlan, who has portrayed Penelope Featherington since the beginning of Netflix’s hit period drama, recently opened up about her reduced role in the upcoming season. After years of serving as one of the franchise’s central figures, Penelope’s story is entering a new chapter — one that will place other characters firmly in the spotlight.

Speaking about the transition, Coughlan described the experience as both emotional and rewarding. The actress reflected on her journey with the series, calling it an incredible run while praising Bridgerton’s unique format, which allows each season to focus on a different love story.
Penelope has played a crucial role throughout the show’s first four seasons. Beyond her romance with Colin Bridgerton, she was also secretly responsible for the scandalous Lady Whistledown column that fueled much of the drama across the Ton. Her long-hidden identity was finally exposed, leading to major consequences and ultimately bringing her time as Lady Whistledown to an end.
However, Season 4 delivered one final surprise when viewers learned that a new Lady Whistledown had emerged following Penelope’s retirement. The twist instantly became one of the biggest mysteries in the franchise, with fans already attempting to uncover who has taken over the famous gossip sheet.

Interestingly, Coughlan revealed that she remains just as clueless as viewers. According to the actress, the production team intentionally kept the identity of the new Lady Whistledown secret from her because she admits she is “terrible at keeping secrets.” As a result, she still has no idea who is behind the new column and says she prefers it that way.
While Penelope’s presence may be reduced, Coughlan made it clear that her connection to the series remains strong. The actress said she would gladly return whenever the show asks, regardless of how large or small the role may be.
The decision to scale back Penelope’s storyline comes as Bridgerton prepares to shift its focus toward Francesca Bridgerton’s journey. Season 5 is expected to center on Francesca and Michaela Stirling, continuing one of the most talked-about developments introduced in previous seasons.
The relationship has generated significant discussion among fans since the series departed from Julia Quinn’s original novels by introducing Michaela instead of Michael Stirling. Showrunner Jess Brownell has previously described the storyline as an important part of the show’s evolving approach to romance and representation.
With Penelope stepping away from the center of the narrative, Season 5 appears poised to usher in a new era for Bridgerton. Between the mystery surrounding the new Lady Whistledown and Francesca’s highly anticipated love story, the upcoming season could mark one of the franchise’s biggest transformations yet.
