Duncan Sheik, the singer-songwriter best known for his 1996 hit “Barely Breathing” and the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening, has been hospitalized and is currently in critical but stable condition, according to a statement released by his family.
The update was shared on Sheik’s official Instagram account on Sept. 17, with his family confirming that the 56-year-old artist is receiving medical care. While they did not disclose further details about his condition, they asked for privacy during what they described as an “incredibly difficult time.”
“Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time,” the statement read. “We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate. Thank you for the continued love and support.”
The announcement quickly sparked concern among fans and members of the entertainment community, many of whom took to social media to share messages of support and well wishes.
Page Six reported that representatives for Sheik had been contacted for additional comment, though no further information had been released as of publication.
Sheik first rose to international fame with “Barely Breathing,” the breakthrough single from his self-titled debut album. The song became one of the defining hits of the late 1990s, peaking at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1998.
Reflecting on the song years later, Sheik described its success as life-changing, noting that the track took on a life of its own after becoming a major radio hit.
Beyond his recording career, Sheik found tremendous success in musical theater. He composed the music for Spring Awakening, the groundbreaking Broadway adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s play. The production earned widespread acclaim and won multiple Tony Awards, including honors for Sheik’s original score and orchestrations in 2007.
The original cast featured future stars including Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, and Sheik has previously spoken fondly about the experience of developing the show and working alongside its talented ensemble.
His theatrical work continued with projects such as American Psycho: The Musical, for which he wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel.
In addition to his stage achievements, Sheik has remained active as a recording artist, releasing nine studio albums throughout his career. His most recent album, Claptrap, arrived in 2022.
