Royalty Meets Real Wildlife: Dame Judi Dench and Sam Heughan Steal the Show by Naming Southern Scotland’s Newest Golden Eagle Fledglings

Hollywood royalty and Scottish icons have officially collided in the most majestic way possible. In a major triumph for wildlife conservation that reads straight out of a Hollywood script, southern Scotland’s golden eagle population has soared to a historic milestone. Four magnificent young eaglets—all direct descendants of birds translocated through the groundbreaking charity initiative Restoring Upland Nature (RUN)—have successfully hatched and taken their inaugural flights as official fledglings. This phenomenal achievement brings the region’s total number of successfully fledged golden eagles this year to an impressive five, proving that the local population is well on its way to becoming fully self-sustaining.

Among these star-studded arrivals is a direct sibling of Princeling—the trailblazing chick who made history last year as the first-ever fledgling born to a translocated eagle, famously named by Sir David Attenborough. To celebrate this latest victory for the South of Scotland and North of England Golden Eagle Projects, Academy Award-winning legend Dame Judi Dench and Outlander heartthrob Sam Heughan stepped up to baptize two of these newly independent dynamos.

A Bond Legacy: Dame Judi Dench Welcomes “GoldenEye”

Stepping into a role fit for cinema history, legendary actress Dame Judi Dench was given the extraordinary honor of naming a very special fledgling: the grandchild of a male eagle who currently holds the record as the oldest living wild golden eagle in Europe at a whopping 36 years old. Channeling her iconic cinematic past, the Oscar winner chose the name GoldenEye as a direct nod to the blockbuster James Bond film in which she famously starred as the franchise’s first-ever female M.

Reflecting on the magical moment, Dame Judi shared: “I would like to congratulate the charity Restoring Upland Nature and everyone who has supported their pioneering work to restore this iconic species to record numbers in the South of Scotland. A real triumph over adversity.”

She added with a touch of nostalgia, “It is an enormous privilege to name a golden eagle that has fledged from the nest of an eagle translocated by the project. Many years ago, as the first female M, I instructed James Bond to ‘find GoldenEye’ and here he is! I wish GoldenEye a long life soaring in southern skies and RUN the best of luck in their continued work. I really hope they can now replicate their success south of the border. Seeing golden eagles in the wild is a truly awe-inspiring experience, and it is wonderful to think that even more people will now have the opportunity to witness them soaring freely once again.”

GoldenEye boasts an elite lineage: his father is Shine (translocated by the South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project in 2021) and his mother is Amelia, who made history by fledging from the Scottish Borders’ sole remaining original nest in 2021. Meanwhile, his 16-year-old grandmother, Roxy, carries the oldest working satellite tag in Scotland.

Sam Heughan’s Highland Nod: Meet “Sassy”

Not to be outdone, Outlander star, Galloway Distillery co-owner, and passionate regional champion Sam Heughan took center stage to name Princeling’s newborn brother. In a clever and playful tribute to his own entrepreneurial roots, Heughan christened the young bird ‘Sassy’ as a sweet nod to his Sassenach Whisky. Sassy hatched safely from the nest of Emma, a female eagle translocated back in 2021.

Golden Eagles Are Tagged As Part Of National Survey

An ecstatic Heughan stated: “It is a great honour to be invited to name a golden eagle that represents such hope for the future of this magnificent species in the South of Scotland. I’m delighted to know that this magnificent creature might explore the beauty of my hometown and surrounding area, I hope it may even fly over The Galloway Distillery.”

“There’s something incredibly moving about seeing a native golden eagle soaring over the landscape and it was truly moving to meet one recently up close. It reminds you just how wild, beautiful and special these birds are and how they belong in southern Scotland. I’d like to congratulate Restoring Upland Nature, and all their supporters, on their continued success. Knowing these young birds are once again taking to the skies thanks to the dedication of communities here is truly inspiring and I cannot wait to see them in the wild,” Heughan continued.

Behind the Scenes: Meet the Rest of the Royal Flock

While GoldenEye and Sassy have captured global headlines, the southern skies are welcoming other remarkable fledglings who form the backbone of this historic ecological turnaround:

  • Beaky Jr (Currently Unnamed): Marking a monumental conservation victory, Beaky Jr is the very first chick to successfully fledge from the nest of a translocated eagle situated on a managed grouse moor in the southern uplands. Born to mother Beaky (translocated in 2018 from the Jahama Estate in the Scottish Highlands) and father Skan (translocated in 2019), this little fighter will soon be officially named by local gamekeepers who have played an indispensable role in protecting and supporting the project.
  • N47 (Currently Unnamed): Born to mother ‘Dora’ (translocated from a Perthshire hills grouse moor in 2022 and named by St Dominics Primary School near Crieff) and biological father Talla (translocated from Ardverikie Estate), N47 has had a turbulent start to life. Currently recovering in the care of a Scottish SPCA hospital after contracting a rare bacterial infection alongside adoptive father Hamlet (translocated from the Outer Hebrides in 2023), conservationists are fighting hard for his recovery so he can be re-released back into the wild.
  • The Fifth Fledgling: Completing the magical five-strong class of 2026 is an unnamed fledgling born to an established local breeding pair—proving that native birds are now successfully nesting alongside their translocated peers.

Each of these precious arrivals has been meticulously satellite-tagged by licensed experts backed by RUN, local Scottish Raptor Study Group members, and dedicated landowners, ensuring their soaring progress is closely watched.

A Milestone Victory for British Conservation

Dr. Cat Barlow, CEO of RUN, emphasized the staggering gravity of the moment: “Seeing not just one, but four young birds hatch, fledge and fly freely from the nests of golden eagles that we translocated to southern Scotland is a hugely significant milestone in our work to restore the species to southern skies.”

She added, “It shows that where there are healthy ecosystems and the risk of interference is low, translocated eagles can successfully integrate into native populations to breed successfully. It gives us genuine hope that we can help reverse biodiversity decline and ensure current and future generations across Scotland, England and Wales experience that incredible sense of awe when they see a golden eagle.”

RUN Chair Michael Clarke echoed this sentiment, highlighting how cross-industry collaboration—from forestry workers and farmers to gamekeepers—has built a protective safety net for the birds. Backed by partners like Forestry England and Defra, the project is looking ahead to expanding its groundbreaking framework across the rest of the UK.

With southern Scotland’s golden eagle population officially surging past 50 individual birds—marking the highest density seen in the region for three centuries—an astounding 80% survival rate among translocated birds, and cross-border explorations reaching northern England, these skies have never looked more alive. Whether they are dodging Scottish mist or inspiring Hollywood legends, these golden raptors are officially back where they belong.
