Meghan Markle has been the subject of a series of humiliating reports about everything from her relationship with the royals to the “real reasons” she has gone through large amounts of staff, but the newest comes from claims she is upset that her former friend, Victoria Beckham, 51, has eclipsed her success with a new documentary.
The Duchess of Sussex, 44, was allegedly left “shaken” by the former Spice Girl and fashion designer’s documentary, which was released on Netflix, the same platform with which she has her own multimillion-dollar deal.
Though she has had some success with her new lifestyle content platform, which has included teasers of new items in her As Ever brand with a recent “save the date” plea, Markle allegedly is upset and hurt over Beckham’s three-part documentary series.
The series premiered on the platform on October 9 and covered topics such as Beckham’s rise to fame as a pop star and her reinvention as a respected fashion designer and businesswoman.
Now, it appears it eclipsed Markle’s projects with ratings and critical acclaim.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Markle’s With Love Meghan series has not fared well. The first season received 38% critics and 33% audience ratings, with season two clocking even lower at 17% and 27%, respectively. Beckham’s series scored a 44% with critics and a 77% with audiences.
“Meghan’s shaken by this,” a source told Radar Online after the fact.
“Victoria has achieved exactly what she aspired to-moving seamlessly from celebrity to credible business figure. Meghan’s been trying to establish herself as a cultural powerhouse, but Victoria’s documentary has completely overshadowed her. It stings, no question about it.”
The new report comes after relations between the two, as well as their husbands, Prince Harry, 41, and David Beckham, 50, soured since the Beckhams attended the 2018 royal wedding.
The sting of Beckham’s success also hurts the Duchess of Sussex in the sense that her deal with Netflix was scaled back to a “first-look” arrangement after her initial $100 million contract expired, and reports that her As Ever brand is struggling.
“Meghan can see how naturally Victoria earns respect-she’s built a thriving brand, kept her marriage strong, and stayed out of controversy,” a source told Radar.
“That’s the kind of seamless reinvention Meghan always wanted. Now she’s having to watch Victoria pull it off instead.”
