There was plenty of hype surrounding Eddington during the lead-up to its release. The film received scores of 69% from critics and 65% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, yet it remained highly divisive and controversial. This also led to it struggling at the box office, barely grossing half its $25 million budget with a $13 million global box office total. It has found some success on VOD in recent weeks, but likely not enough to recuperate any significant losses. It’s estimated that Eddington is going to lose between $30 and $40 million for A24.
Eddington was written and directed by Ari Aster, who has made a name for himself by releasing memorable movies that stir up conversation. Before Eddington, Aster teamed with Joaquin Phoenix for Beau is Afraid, another divisive movie that struggled at the box office, pulling in only $12 million against a $35 million budget. He’s also famous for his work on Midsommar and Hereditary, two critically acclaimed horror films starring Florence Pugh and Toni Collette. It’s unclear what Aster’s next project will be.
