Sunday marks 70 years since Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne on February 6, 1952 following the death of her father King George VI.

As the nation honoured the occasion, Piers shared a heartfelt Instagram post dedicated to the monarch, writing: ‘The 🐐. Congratulations to Queen Elizabeth II on becoming the first British Monarch to reign for 70 years.

‘What a magnificent rock of wise, calm, strong & empathetic leadership she has been for this country through good times and bad.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker tweeted: ‘70 years at the helm. A truly remarkable woman. Thank you to Her Majesty The Queen.’

To mark the special occasion today, Buckingham Palace released a picture of the Queen laughing at her Sandringham estate. Her Majesty was photographed working from her famous red boxes as she became the first British monarch to mark 70 years on the throne.

Poignantly, there is a picture of her father King George VI next to her who died seven decades ago today, leaving her to take the Crown aged just 25.
