Shelby Township — Kim Mathers, the ex-wife of Detroit rapper Eminem, was sentenced to a fine and probation and will avoid jail time after a drunken-driving suicide attempt in October 2015.

Mathers’ sentencing was handled by Judge Douglas Shepherd in 41A District Court in Shelby Township.

Shepherd was insistent that Mathers was, and would be, treated like any other first-time DUI offender, and said the sentence he handed down — a $900 fine, yearlong reporting probation, with random alcohol testing four times per month and random drug testing twice per month — reflected that.

Mathers’s defense attorney, Michael Smith, said the Oct. 7, 2015, incident, during which she drove a Cadillac Escalade into a utility pole and ultimately into a ditch, was a suicide attempt — something Mathers admitted to in a radio interview in May on WKQI-FM’s “Mojo in the Morning” show.

According to police reports, Mathers told an emergency worker at the time that she had drank a fifth of Malibu rum before getting behind the wheel.

Speaking briefly to the court, Mathers, who last October pleaded guilty to impaired driving, said she was “really, truly, deeply sorry” for her actions that day, and that her behavior “didn’t take into consideration anyone else’s safety.”

That she already has started substance abuse counseling — rather than wait to be forced into it by the court — was factored into the sentence, Shepherd said. She will be required to continue that counseling over the course of the year.

In addition to the $900 fine, Mathers will have to cover court costs and the cost of her testing. The probation department may impose additional conditions.

After sentencing, Mathers paid her fine, took part in a short scrum with reporters — during which she reiterated her regret for putting the public at risk — and drove off in a red Cadillac Escalade.
