Film lovers rejoice! An exciting celebration is in the works for the 20th anniversary of Ang Lee’s groundbreaking film Brokeback Mountain.

Focus Features is marking the 20th anniversary of the release of the classic gay romance filmBrokeback Mountain by rereleasing it in theaters for special screenings that start this summer.

Brokeback Mountain is the three-time Oscar-winning film starring Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, and Michelle Williams about two cowboys who fall in love.

This sweeping Western epic follows Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal) and Ennis Del Mar (Ledger), two cowboys who meet while working on a sheep ranch on Brokeback Mountain in 1963.

“During their experience, Ennis and Jack are drawn into an unexpected lifelong relationship, filled with love and loss and unfolding against the raw beauty and splendor of the American West. The complications, joys, and heartbreak they experience provide a testament to the endurance and power of love,” a press release reads.

Both Ledger and Gyllenhaal were nominated for Oscars for their roles, and Lee won Best Director. The film is also part of one of the most infamous Oscars controversies in history, when it lost Best Picture to Crash, which is widely considered to be one of the worst Best Picture winners of all time.

20 years later, this cinematic love story remains one of the most critically acclaimed queer movies of all time. In 2024, Out named Brokeback Mountain the second best queer film of the century so far.

The 20th anniversary re-release of Brokeback Mountain premieres Friday, June 10 in theaters. Presale tickets are now available via Focus Features.
