Kate Middleton and Prince William joined members of the royal family at Westminster Abbey on Monday, March 10, to celebrate Commonwealth Day – and shared a sweet moment.

The royal couple was joined by King Charles, Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester as they attended services honoring the Commonwealth of Nations.

Westminster Abbey is a place of significance for William, 42, and Kate, 43, as it was the site of their April 2011 wedding. The couple will celebrate 14 years of marriage next month, but on Monday, they were content to share a laugh together — and the sweet, candid display of affection was caught on camera.

William and Kate also stopped to chat with two young attendees outside the Abbey, who handed Kate a bouquet of flowers.

The outing is the latest sighting of the prince and princess together since Kate returned to life as a working royal, following her Jan. 14 announcement that she is in “remission” from cancer.

Following Kate’s news, a source close to the royal household told PEOPLE that seeing their family through the difficulties of the last year together has made the couple “more open” with each other.

Of their public displays of affection, royal biographer Ingrid Seward also noted, “William must feel so fortunate that Kate has come through this that he wants to tell the world about that love. It shows the intimacy of them sharing that journey together.”

“They are able to express themselves in a way they would never have done before,” Seward added.

William himself has admitted that the past 12 months were “brutal” from a personal standpoint, calling it “probably the hardest year in my life” as both his wife and father, King Charles, faced cancer.

The King’s treatment is ongoing, but news of Kate’s remission was a relief for both the prince, as well as the couple’s children: Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.

In a June 2024 social media post for William’s birthday, Kate made sure to show her appreciation, writing, “We all love you so much!”

The prince reciprocated with a heartfelt personal message to his wife on Jan. 9. “To the most incredible wife and mother. The strength you’ve shown over the last year has been remarkable. George, Charlotte, Louis and I are so proud of you… We love you,” William wrote.

Kate’s bold red Commonwealth Day look was one she’s worn before. Kate donned the Catherine Walker coatdress to host her Royal Carols – Together At Christmas concert at Westminster Abbey in December 2021 and again in November 2023, to welcome the president and first lady of South Korea.

However, the eye-catching red bow on the dress continues a recent trend for the royal. She’s been adding bows of various colors and sizes to previously-worn outfits in order to upcycle them into something new.

“The bow is the one accessory that she’s repeatedly added and it’s totally transformed previous outfits into something that looks quite different,” Bethan Holt, fashion director at the Telegraph, told PEOPLE last year.

“I think she is trying a more sustainable way of dressing. She already has a vast and extensive wardrobe, so why shouldn’t she be looking for ways to take existing pieces and re-imagine them?” Holt added. “And a bow is a very democratic, universal way to do that.”
