Why Samantha Really Texted in And Just Like That — Michael Patrick King Explains the Surprise

Kim Cattrall appears in 'And Just Like That' Season 2 finale - Los Angeles Times

Samantha Jones! I repeat, Samantha Jones! The legendary character has made another “appearance” of sorts on this season of And Just Like That…, and while it’s not quite as good as having Kim Cattrall actually appear in the show, it’s the next best thing. In this week’s episode, Carrie gets more acquainted with her downstairs neighbor Duncan Reeve. He’s from London, so naturally, she assumes Samantha knows him. Carrie sends Samantha a text to ask, and Samantha replies, “They say he’s a lot of fun…. I wish he was under me.” CLASSIC Samantha.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan, creator Michael Patrick King explained the reasoning behind the text cameo.

“In our minds, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte are always texting Samantha, even though the herculean task of actually getting Samantha to appear can only happen every now and then,” King said. “This was born out of story. We had a man from London move in underneath Carrie. How can you not draw a direct line from Man From London to Samantha, who’s in London? She will know him. And so that’s what Carrie would naturally do.”

Cattrall has famously not wanted to participate in And Just Like That…, but last season, she did appear in one scene where Samantha had a phone conversation with Carrie. She and Sarah Jessica Parker did not film the scene in the same place. Based on the “herculean task” phrasing above, it seems like it would be a huge challenge to get Kim to do another one of those cameos, and this was the solution.

“So we made this effortless cameo text, a drive-by to say, like, what do you know about him? And we did put a little bit of the Sex and the City theme under it because it is a reference to another era. It’s just to keep it alive,” King said.

While it would be nice to have Cattrall make more appearances, it does make sense to save them for the big moments. We can only hope the timing is right at some point in the future.
