During the interview, Strahovski talked about how Serena was blindsided by Commander Wharton (Josh Charles) and how the “return” to Gilead — or New Bethlehem if you prefer — triggered both the character and even Strahovski herself. After she gets married, Serena comes home to find out that a handmaid was gifted to her and Wharton as a way to remind her that she has family-administering duties. Strahovski stated:
“You know, it’s all peaches, roses and unicorns for a while there, and we think, ‘Wow, they’re on the same page, and they’ve discussed the page. They have talked about the page, everyone knows about the page, we’re good!’ And then, we’re married, and we get home, and it becomes apparent very quickly that they are not on the same page. [The Serena-Wharton fight] was one of my favorite scenes to shoot of the season. Obviously it’s got some spice to it, because I love the spicy scenes. But it really took me back to one of the original ick feelings that I had in the earlier seasons. Well, the scenes, but also the setup: being back in a Gileadean house with an office… it just sort of threw me right back into the feeling of genuine outrage.”
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’s Series Finale Is in Two Weeks
Similarly, Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) witnessed the extent of the cruelty of Gilead with the handmaids, and it looks like this time it finally hit her differently. How the series ends for these characters might give a major hint of what the starting point of the sequel series The Testaments will be, and in a couple of weeks, we will have the full picture of it.
