The Handmaid’s Tale has finally come to a close after eight years, but fans aren’t exactly thrilled by how June’s story ended.
During the series finale, aired on May 26th, June Osbourne (Elisabeth Moss) takes a reflective walk through a newly-liberated Boston, reflecting on her life under Gilead’s regime.
In a surprising twist, she runs into Emily/Ofglen (Alexis Bledel), who left the show after four seasons.
Emily explains that she has been working under the guise of a Martha, explaining that her wife and son are the reason she decided to go back to Gilead.
As her stroll continues, June ties up other loose ends from her past. However, there is one reunion that fans had hoped for, which did not come to fruition in the finale.
Viewers have been waiting for June to see her daughter Hannah again, with many anticipating that the final episode will feature a grand reunion between the pair.
Although the installment included flashback scenes of the mother and daughter duo, they do not have a clear reunion.
Towards the end of the episode, we see a vision in which June appears to be grabbing Hannah’s hand, before a glimpse of what appears to be a teenage Hannah. Whether the pair actually see each other again is open to interpretation, but the segment does not give fans the emotional get-together they expected.
With the mother and daughter seemingly still separated, fans have been left fuming, with some branding it the ‘worst series finale ever.’
“Thanks for absolutely f****** nothing The Handmaid’s Tale series finale,” penned one on X, formerly Twitter.
Someone else chimed in, stating: “How TF could you end it without June reuniting with Hannah?!?! That’s all we’ve been waiting for!!!! I’m so pissed off with how this ended!!”
Yet another viewer shared their brutal verdict, saying: “No Hannah? Wtf? Worst series finale ever!! ALL THESE YEARS WAITING FOR JUNE TO REUNITE WITH HANNAH JUST TO GET NOTHING!”
“That had to be one of the worst series finale episodes I’ve ever watched. All the hype for nothing. No closure. Handmaid’s Tale dropped the f**** ball,” echoed a fourth.
Despite the negative consensus, some Hulu viewers have been left in awe. “Holy s***. Holy. F******. S****. Thank you so, so much Margaret Atwood, Elisabeth moss & Hulu. You have given me a fantatsic show and story to follow for these eight years. I am honored to have followed along, and this finale was truly amazing,” said an impressed fan.
They weren’t alone, as someone else shared: “Genuinely concerned about all the tweets I’m seeing calling the Handmaid’s Tale series finale trash?? I was straight up bawling my eyes out the entire time.”
