Taylor Dearden Spills Bizarre On-Set Rules as ‘The Pitt’ Gears Up for Season 2: “I’m Not a Doctor, Right?”

Taylor Dearden as Dr. Mel King in The Pitt Season 2

The Pitt introduced audiences to a host of compelling characters from the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, but few stood out quite like Dr. Melissa King, portrayed by Taylor Dearden. Known as Mel, she’s a neurodivergent physician with a rare gift for connecting deeply with patients—even the ones other staff members struggle to reach.

One of the show’s most captivating storytelling choices is its real-time format: the entire 15-episode first season unfolds over a single hospital shift, with each episode representing one hour of that day. To maintain this unique rhythm, the cast filmed everything in order, starting with Episode 1 and progressing chronologically—unlike most streaming series that shoot scenes out of sequence, often wrapping finales before early scenes are even filmed.

In an interview for Collider Ladies Night, Perri Nemiroff sat down with Dearden to uncover more behind-the-scenes secrets. She revealed just how “fast-paced” the production really is, and that it operates under a few unexpected rules. The cast isn’t allowed to use phones, there are no chairs to retreat to between takes, and when off-set, the actors relax on a different set entirely—often the hospital’s family room.

“We’re just sitting there like, ‘I’m sorry to tell you about your family,’” Dearden said, referring to how their staging environment keeps them anchored in the show’s emotional tone. “It kind of gets you into the reality of the situation more than if you had downtime to scroll your phone or sit in your own trailer.”

To reinforce that immersion, the crew has designed the set to feel as natural as possible. All lighting is embedded in the ceiling and controlled via iPads—no tripods, no glaring stage lights on stands. Everything is shot handheld. This stripped-down, no-frills approach blurs the line between performance and reality so effectively that Dearden confessed: “I forgot for a second—I was like, ‘I’m pretty sure I’m a doctor.’”

What Do We Know About ‘The Pitt’ Season 2?

The Pitt secured its Season 2 renewal well ahead of the Season 1 finale, proving the medical drama had already stitched itself into viewers’ hearts. The production team didn’t miss a beat—filming officially kicked off last week, and the next chapter is already underway.

While the returning cast and new character details remain under wraps, one major shift is confirmed: Season 2 will leap forward in time, unfolding over the Fourth of July weekend. Despite the new holiday backdrop, the show will stick to its signature format—each episode unfolding in real-time over a single high-stakes shift, shot in the exact order viewers will experience it.

With cameras rolling and anticipation building, The Pitt Season 2 is slated to premiere early next year. Until then, catch up on all the drama with Season 1 on HBO Max, and dive deeper into the world behind the scrubs with Taylor Dearden’s full interview on Collider Ladies Night.
