Princess Kate Middleton maintains a touch of normality in the Royal Family, making sure her life with Prince William and their children is relatively down-to-earth.
Speaking during an engagement in 2019, Kate revealed she often includes her children in cooking dinners. She said roast chicken is said to be a family favourite and is one of Prince William’s preferred meals.
Kate frequently rustles up a roast for her husband. Royal reporter Katie Nicholl revealed in Vanity Fair in 2012: “In the evenings she indulges her hobby of cooking William’s favourite supper, roast chicken.”
These glimpses into the household date back to the days when William and Kate were newlyweds living on the Isle of Anglesey, while William served as a search and rescue pilot for the RAF.
The Express has reported that although roast chicken is a dish close to Prince William’s heart, the Royal Family enjoys a diverse array of cuisines. On a visit to St Luke’s Community Centre in London in 2018, Kate was seen making pizzas with children, where she remarked: “I’ve done that with George and Charlotte – making pizza dough. They love it because they can get their hands messy.”
At the time, the couple were supporting the Commonwealth Big Lunch project, donning aprons and engaging in food preparation, reports the Mirror. This initiative celebrates the Commonwealth through community involvement.
Additionally, the Royal couple occasionally indulges in takeaways, with Indian or Chinese being among their top picks. In a revealing 2017 interview with BBC Radio 1’s Scott Mills, the Royal couple shared that they are “absolutely” permitted to indulge in takeaway treats. Kate disclosed her preference for “curry, definitely”, while William confessed his struggle with spicy food.
Even Queen Camilla, despite having access to top-notch chefs, occasionally enjoys a takeaway meal. In a conversation with her son Tom Parker Bowles for YOU Magazine, she expressed her love for “Freshly cooked fish and chips, wrapped in paper. That smell. You cannot beat proper fish and chips.”
This choice mirrors the tastes of her mother-in-law, the late Queen Elizabeth II, who was also reported to have had a penchant for fish and chips.
When it comes to beverages, the royals have their personal favourites for unwinding after a long day. Kate’s drink of choice is the quintessentially British gin and tonic, aligning her with many across the UK.
An Edinburgh Live report cited a palace insider stating, “William will bring Kate a gin and tonic. They look after each other but in different ways.”
The couple has previously made light-hearted comments about their domestic life and how they manage their household duties.
During a playful exchange on Radio 1, Kate quipped: “You’re looking at me? ” when the topic of who would be preparing dinner came up. She then confessed that she’d likely whip up a teriyaki salmon or curry for their family meal.
