Pierce Brosnan Says He & Helen Mirren’s Maeve Will “Rule or Die Trying” in ‘MobLand’

MobLand ended its first season with a bang—and a song. As Conrad and Maeve Harrigan (Helen Mirren) were hauled off to prison, the couple serenaded law enforcement with defiant cheer, refusing to let their empires fall quietly. According to MobLand star Pierce Brosnan, that moment said everything about their relationship.

“I think they have to stay together,” Brosnan told The Hollywood Reporter. “These two will go down together.”

Though cracks have certainly appeared in their marriage — particularly after the chaos at Tommy Stevenson’s funeral and amid betrayals within the Harrigan bloodline — Brosnan believes the characters are fused together by more than love. They’re connected by legacy, power, and survival, even singing an Irish rebel song in defiance as they’re arrested and taken from their home.

“It is a big ‘F- you’ to the establishment, to the British, to the coppers, to the law enforcement in England. They’re Irish, they live in the heart of the Cotswolds. They have money. Nobody comes close to them. So they know they’re going to get out, and they like it. They’ve been inside before.”

Brosnan also pulled back the curtain on Conrad’s psyche, hinting at a layered man beneath the mob-boss bravado. “This is a man who comes from a very broken background, one more than likely of abuse, sexual abuse, violence, self-loathing … fearless, courageous,” he said.

“He’s a sentimentalist as well. He’s Irish. He loves the old gargle — the gargle being the booze. He’s filled with great humor and passion and deep pride in being an Irishman, but he’s also a father and someone who has a pride in that and what he’s done by his family.”

As for Maeve? She may be just as dangerous, if not more. Brosnan doesn’t think their bond can ever be undone. “I really don’t know where it’s going to go,” he said. “But these two will go down together.”

What Happened in the ‘MobLand’ Finale?

The finale saw Kevin Harrigan (Paddy Considine) confronting his traumatic past and asserting dominance within the Harrigan family, while working with Tom Hardy‘s Harry Da Souza to eliminate their enemies, including the rival crime boss Richie Stevenson and the family’s mole, O’Hara. Meanwhile, Harry has his own sh*t to deal with as his wife, Jan, accidentally stabs him during a heated argument. Classic. The episode ends with Brosnan’s Conrad Harrigan receiving a hero’s welcome in prison.

MobLand Season 1 is streaming on Paramount+ now.
