Outlander star Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire Fraser in the historical fantasy series, has teased that the second part of season 7 will end with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger.
The actress, who has appeared beside Jamie Fraser actor Sam Heughan in the Starz show for over a decade, gave an insight into the new episodes ahead of their release later this month.
It comes after the star recently shared emotional posts about filming coming to an end, as they wrapped their eighth and final shoot earlier this year.
The two leads have appeared in over 100 episodes together, with the final few expected to drop sometime in late 2025.
In the meantime, fans are excited to see how the rest of season 7 plays out, with Balfe spilling the beans about Jamie and Claire’s long-awaited return to Scotland in 1778.
Speaking to TV Insider, she revealed there is a jaw-dropping cliffhanger fans just won’t see coming.
Recalling filming the moment, which is apparently set in a church, she said: “The last scene…occasionally you get scenes where you get goosebumps. Even [talking about it] now, it’s really powerful.
“There are certain things that when you filmed them, they are in your mind. That feeling never leaves you.
“So, when we went to film [the ending], I got this bolt of a memory. It all feels very like, ‘Ooh, spooky.’ [Claire thinks] how can it be? How’s it possible?”
Turning her attention to the show’s final season, Balfe revealed: “[Season 8] is probably the season I’ve known the least about going into it. I have no idea how the season ends.
“We only got the scripts for Episodes 1 and 2 about two months before we started. We would usually have more [time]. I don’t think [the producers] trust any of us, to be honest,” she added with a laugh.
“I think they’re trying to keep things very, very close to their chest. We are as excited and nervous and curious to see what’s going to happen as everybody else.”
Speaking at the Paley Center for Media earlier this week, Outlander’s Executive Producer Maril Davis also revealed upcoming episodes will be an emotional watch for fans.
She divulged: “I mean this is such a rollercoaster. [Season] 7b is such a rollercoaster. I always say this every season – I feel like I say, ‘Buckle your seatbelts.’
“But this one in particular is an emotional rollercoaster, so I think people should prepare to be, kind of… wrung out.”
These insights come ahead of Outlander’s return in less than two weeks’ time, with fans excitedly anticipating what comes next for our favourite time-travelling heroine
The epic fantasy show, which is based on author Diana Gabaldon’s book series of the same name, will wrap up for good in 2025.
