Nick Bosa is expected to be one of the first players selected in the NFL Draft come late April. The former Ohio State defensive end has long been thought of highly, given his older brother, Joey Bosa, is already an NFL star and the success he had as a Buckeye. On Sunday at the NFL Combine, Bosa did nothing to hurt his draft ranking.
The defensive linemen took to the field for workouts, which meant Bosa took part in the 40-yard dash. Bosa was disappointed with his first attempt, clocking in unofficially at 4.86 seconds. He improved in his second effort, running the 40 in 4.79 seconds, tied for 15th best among the defensive linemen.
Despite being one of the top prospects in the NFL Draft pool, Bosa still had something to prove at the combine. The defensive end only played in three games as a junior last season after he suffered a core muscle injury in Ohio State’s Sept. 15 game against TCU. While originally not thought to be season-ending, Bosa and his family made the decision to shut him down, pulling the junior out of school so he could move out to Southern California and focus on his recovery and preparing for the combine.
This weekend was a chance for Bosa to showcase that he is fully recovered, as it was the first time the defensive end took part in public workouts. Along with interviews and drills, Bosa also went through a medical examination, which will be equally as important as his performances to show he is healthy.
“Right when I went down I felt it. I know what a serious injury is,” Bosa said at the combine on Saturday. “I knew my season was in jeopardy and I had a doctor confirm that. It was tough, but it had to be done.
“I’ve been training at full speed for a couple months, but actually feeling like myself, not feeling soreness after, probably a few weeks… I’ve been talking myself up pretty good to them, so I’m definitely ready to get out on the field tonight and definitely leave no doubt.”
In his Ohio State career, Bosa managed 77 total tackles, 29 tackles for a loss and 17.5 sacks despite rarely starting a game for the Buckeyes. Over his first two years with the Scarlet and Gray, Bosa was in a rotation with Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis and Jalyn Holmes, all defensive ends that were selected in last year’s NFL Draft. Last season was supposed to be the time Bosa showed what he could do as a starter, but the injury changed all of that. Bosa still managed 14 total tackles, six tackles for a loss and four sacks in just over two and a half games.
Bosa defensive line teammate at Ohio State, Dre’Mont Jones, also ran at the combine on Sunday, clocking in at 5.13 seconds.
