Moss stated that, much like every fan, she had the “I can’t believe it’s ending” moment and revealed that the final shot of the series is the one that made her emotional. She also compared it to Mad Men, another long-running series that she starred in. However, in Mad Men she didn’t direct the last episode, so this time around she barely had time to come to terms with the fact that she might never play June again. She stated:
“[T]here was one moment when I did cry, and that was watching that last take. And I think it’s just because I said to myself, and I turned to my DP [Stuart Biddlecombe] and I said to him, ‘That’s how this show is supposed to end.’ So I can’t speak to what other people are going to think. I have no idea. And we’re never going to make everyone happy. But as the person who plays June — as the person who’s been closest to this show for the past nine years, who has literally lived and breathed it — it’s how this show is supposed to end. I just don’t know if that’s going to be cathartic.”

Can There Be a Happy Ending for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’?
The silver lining for fans is that this isn’t really a goodbye for The Handmaid’s Tale franchise. Sequel series The Testaments — also based on a novel by author Margaret Atwood — is already in production, and we know that there will be more of that world to explore. The new series doesn’t have a premiere date yet.

The Handmaid’s Tale airs its final episode on May 27.
