As Spencer Dutton, 1923 star Brandon Sklenar has fought off rampaging elephants, fended off lions, and even engaged in an illegal fighting ring on a boat. However, it was a rogue helmet that left him with some real lasting damage.

The 34-year-old actor revealed in a recent Interview chat with his Housemaid costar Sydney Sweeney that the dumbest way he’d ever injured himself was “splitting my own head open” with a helmet while filming a fight sequence for the celebrated Yellowstone prequel. He added, “That was pretty dumb.”

Sklenar explained that the gruesome injury occurred while he was shooting a scene in which Spencer, a World War I veteran, had to stop a man from trying to murder him by slamming a helmet into his neck.

“When we actually shot it, I had the helmet far enough in front of me to have some clearance,” he said. “Then we had to shoot from his point of view, of me slamming it on his neck, and because of the angle I had to hold the helmet really close to me, and we had one shot, so the director told me to just go really ape-s— on it.”

That passion came at a very painful price. “So I came up and hit myself right here under my eye and just totally split my head open,” he continued. “They had to superglue it.”

When asked by Sweeney if he still has a lasting mark from the injury, Sklenar replied, “I do. I got a pretty good scar right next to another scar that I already had there.”

He also pointed out that the mark actually ended up having an effect on the entire season. “They had to CGI it into the other stuff we had already shot before,” he said, “and now he just has this head wound the entire season if you look closely.”
