Alex Dutton’s Heart-Wrenching Remark, ‘He Took Everything,’ Could Be a Harbinger of Her Tragic Fate in 1923 Season 2

Alex Dutton’s (Julia Schlaepfer) comment about the robber in 1923 season 2, episode 4, saying, “He took everything,” could have a heartbreaking meaning. In “Journey the Rivers of Iron,” Alex and Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) get one step closer to Montana as they embark on a voyage by train. While Spencer has a violent encounter on a cargo train heading to California, Alex’s trip is even worse, getting beaten and robbed in the bathroom of Grand Central Terminal in New York City as she prepares to board a train to Boston.

Sadly, Alex’s bathroom robbery might have more tragic consequences than it seemed. The violent experience adds to the harrowing journey that Spencer’s wife has made in 1923 season 2 so far. While the second chapter of Taylor Sheridan’s Prohibition-era prequel about the Dutton family has been ominous for every 1923 character, Alexandra of Sussex arguably has it worse than most as she travels through America on a solo journey. Despite the tribulations she has faced, Alex’s spirit has been indomitable. That said, 1923 season 2, episode 4, might have created her most significant tragedy yet.

Alexandra Might Have Lost Her & Spencer’s Baby In 1923 Season 2, Episode 4

A Robber Kicks Alex In The Stomach At Grand Central Terminal

After Alex is beaten and robbed in the Grand Central Terminal, she lies unconscious on the bathroom floor for about 10 minutes. While Alex makes it onto the train’s caboose deck in a brave feat, she is worse for wear when she makes it on board. As Alex arrives in her sleeper car, which she shares with an Irish woman and her young children, the mother asks her why she has a “fat lip,” and Alex explains that she was robbed. When the woman asks what happened, Alex says everything was taken from her, which has a deeper meaning.

Devastatingly, the robber could have kicked Alex in the stomach hard enough to kill her baby.

Alexandra of Sussex says, “He took everything.” While this could be a turn of phrase, it might foreshadow something heartbreaking. After the robber takes all of Alex’s money and the bracelet that Jennifer (Jo Ellen Pellman) gave her in case of emergency, the Grand Central robber forcefully kicks Alex in the stomach. Devastatingly, the robber could have kicked Alex in the stomach hard enough to kill her baby. In that context, Alex saying that everything was taken from her and laying her hands on her belly makes more sense, indicating her money and the child she shared with Spencer are gone.

How Another Tragedy For Alex Will Affect Her 1923 Season 2 Story

Alex Must Be Stronger Than Ever

Alexandra Dutton speaking passionately in 1923

Alex’s bravery in reuniting with her husband has been indelible. However, the development hinted at in 1923 season 2, episode 4, will test Alexandra’s resolve again. While their baby isn’t the only reason Alexandra Dutton is traveling to be with Spencer, it is a significant motivation for Alex’s rushed voyage. If Alex loses her baby in 1923 season 2, it will first and foremost compromise an element of why she has persevered. As she writes to Spencer in 1923 season 2, episode 2, “I have begun my journey to find you. To bring you the life growing inside me.”

In an interview with TV Line, Schlaepfer hints that Alexandra hasn’t hit rock bottom yet. Therefore, Alex losing her baby could be an impending low point in the Sussex native’s 1923 season 2 story. Alex seems to be experiencing new hopelessness as she lies in her bunk on the train. Spencer’s wife will have to find the willpower to continue. Considering her story so far, she can muster it. Alex tells Spencer that she wants to make “a little army” of children in her letter, so hopefully, the thought of their family still propels Alex forward despite a potential tragedy.
