‘Will Trent’ Season 5 Casts Alexandra Metz as the GBI’s New Deputy Director

Will Trent is preparing for a major change at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation following the death of Amanda Wagner — and the series has now found the character who will step into the vacant leadership role.

Alexandra Metz, known for playing Dr. Yolanda Garcia in HBO’s The Pitt, has joined the ABC crime drama for Season 5 as Birdie Palmer, the newly appointed Deputy Director of the GBI. Birdie will become the new boss of Will Trent and Faith Mitchell, bringing a very different presence to an office still dealing with the consequences of Amanda’s absence.

Meet Birdie Palmer, the GBI’s New Leader

According to reports, Metz will take on the role of Birdie as a series regular.

The new Deputy Director is described as confident, ambitious and razor-sharp, but there is another side to her character. Birdie is also said to be deeply guarded because of a life-altering event from her past, suggesting that her arrival could bring both a new leadership style and new personal mysteries to the series.

Her introduction follows the shocking death of Amanda Wagner, played by Sonja Sohn, during Season 4. Amanda was killed while tracking James Ulster and his daughter Adelaide on a solo mission, leaving a major vacancy within the GBI and an even larger emotional void for the characters around her.

Amanda had been an especially important figure in Will’s life, meaning that her replacement will inevitably create a different dynamic inside the agency.

Appleyard Was Never Meant to Take Amanda’s Place

After Amanda’s death, Bill Appleyard, played by Jason Davis, appeared to be a possible candidate to permanently take over the Deputy Director position. He had previously filled in for Amanda during her medical leave and seemed eager to make the job his own.

However, co-showrunner Karine Rosenthal had already made it clear that Season 5 would introduce an entirely new person rather than simply promoting Appleyard.

Rosenthal explained that Appleyard had essentially served as a temporary step in the transition. While he could return to help during that process, the show intended to bring in a new Deputy Director who would establish a fresh dynamic with both Will and Faith — and potentially create new sources of conflict within the GBI.

Birdie’s arrival now confirms that direction and marks another major reset for the series following the events of Season 4.

A New Dynamic for Will, Faith and the GBI

Season 5 is expected to explore several new character dynamics alongside the arrival of the GBI’s new Deputy Director.

Rosenthal has also teased an ongoing trafficking storyline that will place Faith and Angie at the center of the investigation. The case will serve as an important thread throughout the season without necessarily dominating every episode, while the show also develops new partnerships and relationships among its characters.

Meanwhile, Metz is expected to continue appearing in Season 3 of The Pitt, where she plays Dr. Yolanda Garcia.

With Birdie Palmer joining the GBI after the loss of Amanda Wagner, Will Trent Season 5 is set to introduce a new authority figure whose relationship with Will and Faith could significantly reshape the team’s dynamics.

Will Trent Season 5 will air on ABC, with its premiere date yet to be announced.
