Savannah Guthrie made a rare appearance outside of Today on the September 1 episode of NBC’s Password, but viewers may have been wondering when the episode was actually filmed.
Although the episode aired in September 2026, Password Season 3 began filming in August 2025. This means Guthrie’s appearance was recorded well before the recent months in which she has been largely absent from television.
During the episode, Guthrie joined Jimmy Fallon to help two sets of contestants solve words and compete for cash prizes of up to $25,000.

Savannah Guthrie and Jimmy Fallon Play Two Competitive Games
In the first game, Guthrie and Fallon teamed up with contestants Justin and Kia.
Both celebrities made quick progress during the opening round, although Guthrie struggled with the word “Elegant.” Another difficult clue was “Cliffhanger,” which the contestants solved when only three points remained.
Kia eventually won the game and advanced to the Bonus Round, choosing Guthrie to play first because she was her “first love.” Guthrie correctly guessed six out of 10 words, while Fallon added three more.
For the final bonus clue, Kia gave the word “Guacamole.” After considering the answer, Guthrie and Fallon correctly guessed “Avocado,” helping Kia walk away with $18,000.

The second game paired Guthrie and Fallon with contestants Chantae and Michael. Among the more challenging clues were “Labubu,” “Reporter,” “Hawk,” “Earthquake,” “Crocodile,” “Stonehenge” and “McCartney.”
Michael ultimately won the game and moved on to the Bonus Round. Guthrie correctly answered four words, while Fallon also got four, giving Michael eight correct answers. For the final clue, Michael said “Sweep,” and the celebrities correctly answered “Chimney,” earning him $16,000.
A Rare TV Appearance During a Difficult Year
The Password episode arrived after Guthrie had made relatively few television appearances outside of her work on Today.
Her mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing on February 1, 2026, and had not been found as of September 1. The investigation into her disappearance remains ongoing.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Guthrie is also preparing for a new chapter in her television career. NBC announced in May that she will host a primetime game show based on Wordle, with Jimmy Fallon serving as an executive producer. The series is scheduled to premiere in 2027.
For now, her Password appearance offers viewers a glimpse of Guthrie in a lighter setting, alongside Fallon, as contestants raced to solve clues and compete for thousands of dollars.
