Ahead of the August 5 premiere of FX’s The Shards, anticipation is building around one of the series’ biggest mysteries: the true identity of The Trawler, the elusive serial killer at the center of Ryan Murphy’s latest thriller based on Bret Easton Ellis’ bestselling novel.

Set in Los Angeles in 1981, the series follows high school senior Bret (Igby Rigney) and his close-knit group of friends as a string of brutal murders targeting local teenagers sends shockwaves through their community. The killings coincide with the unexpected arrival of the mysterious new student Robert Mallory (Homer Gere), immediately fueling suspicion among both the characters and the audience.
Although readers of Ellis’ novel have spent years debating who—or what—The Trawler really is, the television adaptation is keeping its biggest secret tightly under wraps. According to Rigney, Ryan Murphy hasn’t revealed the killer’s identity to the cast, and even dismissed one theory the actor shared during production. “I have an idea,” Rigney admitted, “but Ryan told me I was wrong. He’s the only one who knows.”

Other cast members have embraced the uncertainty. Owen Painter confessed he’d rather not know the answer, believing the mystery is part of the show’s appeal. Daniel Dale revealed that the cast frequently exchanged theories while filming, with suspicions ranging from his own character, Ryan Vaughn, to Steven Reinhardt—though he admitted every explanation seemed almost too obvious. He even entertained the possibility that there could be more than one killer.
For Graham Campbell, the endless speculation is exactly what makes The Shards so compelling. Rather than rushing toward a definitive answer, he believes the mystery will keep audiences invested long after each episode airs, allowing new theories to emerge alongside those that have surrounded the novel for years.
With its psychological suspense, layered storytelling, and an unanswered mystery already captivating fans before its debut, The Shards looks poised to become one of the season’s most talked-about thrillers.
