The Marlow Murder Club is back with another seemingly impossible death and the Season 3 premiere wastes no time placing Judith Potts, Suzie Harris and Becks Starling at the center of a new mystery.
Episode 1, titled “The Queen of Poisons,” begins with an ordinary town council meeting in Marlow. But before long, Mayor Geoffrey suddenly collapses and dies, apparently leaving one crucial clue behind: his cup of coffee.
As the investigation unfolds, aconite, anonymous phone calls, suspicious financial activity and a growing list of potential suspects turn Geoffrey’s death into a far more complicated mystery than it first appears.

A Deadly Cup of Coffee
The episode opens as Geoffrey attends a Marlow town meeting alongside estate agent Marcus, architect Terrance and accountant Debbie. Podcaster Sophia is running late, while Suzie briefly arrives to complain about the bridge at Temple being locked.
Before the meeting can properly get underway, Geoffrey suddenly collapses and dies. His final gesture appears to point toward his coffee cup.
Suzie immediately contacts Judith, who is having brunch with Darius, and it does not take long before Judith, Suzie and Becks are pulled into another murder investigation.
Police soon determine that Geoffrey was poisoned with aconite, also known as wolfsbane. The discovery immediately raises questions about Sophia.
Sophia hosts a podcast titled Notes From a Marlow Garden, which previously featured an episode about aconite. She also admits to growing the poisonous plant in a garden at her manor.
When Judith, Suzie and Becks visit Sophia, they find an unsettling collection of potentially deadly plants — along with patches of human hair used throughout the garden. Sophia insists that the unusual gardening method is simply an old-fashioned alternative to using harmful chemicals.
She also strongly denies having any reason to hurt Geoffrey.
According to Sophia, Geoffrey once helped her avoid serious consequences after she made a major mistake while working at a cemetery and mixed up the locations of several graves. Rather than allowing her to face the fallout alone, Geoffrey stepped in and helped resolve the situation.
The List of Suspects Begins to Grow

By most accounts, Geoffrey was a well-liked man who had previously run a publishing house and had no next of kin. Everyone connected to the council meeting claims to have cared about him.
That does not mean everyone is above suspicion.
Marcus appears particularly interested in finding out what Judith and her friends have discovered, even attempting to gather information during what seems to be a conveniently timed encounter.
The investigation takes another turn when the lab confirms that aconite had been placed inside Geoffrey’s coffee pod.
Debbie’s fingerprints are found on the pod alongside Geoffrey’s, but she insists she only arrived after he had already prepared his coffee and used the machine afterward.
Normally, a man named Alec is responsible for laying out the tea and coffee before council meetings. On this occasion, however, Alec never arrived.
Someone had called him and falsely informed him that the meeting had been canceled.
The caller was supposedly Sophia — but she insists she never made the call.
Anonymous Calls Point Judith Toward a Bigger Secret

While the police continue investigating Geoffrey’s death, Judith receives an anonymous call with a cryptic instruction: “follow the money.”
The mysterious caller contacts her again, and Judith manages to keep the conversation going long enough for authorities to trace the call to a phone booth outside All Saints Church.
A webcam positioned in the church spire for a bird-watching group captures footage of a stranger wearing a red beanie near the phone booth.
Debbie recognizes the man as Dave, who built Sophia’s podcast studio.
When Judith, Becks and Suzie track him down, Dave admits that he was responsible for the anonymous calls. He insists, however, that he was trying to help rather than interfere.
Dave had noticed an unusual increase in the council’s petty cash spending and believed Geoffrey would have gone directly to the police if he had discovered what was happening.
Dave also had a personal connection to Geoffrey. The mayor had been mentoring him on a book and had even offered to help him get it published.
The trio naturally begins to question Dave’s motives, but he points out that Geoffrey’s death has actually damaged his own prospects. With Geoffrey gone, his strongest connection to the publishing world — and potentially his best opportunity to become a published author — may be gone as well.
A Heated Argument and a Final Threat
Dave is far from the only person who may have had a reason to want Geoffrey out of the way.
Detective Constable Jason discovers video footage showing Geoffrey involved in a heated confrontation with Terrance. Mrs. Eddingham, who was nearby, later confirms that she overheard the argument.
Terrance accused Geoffrey of mishandling a situation and demanded that comments on the council website be disabled. He also claims that he saw someone through a window, introducing yet another unexplained detail into the case.
Judith and Suzie later visit Geoffrey’s home to verify Dave’s claims about the manuscript he had been working on. There, they find the manuscript and confirm that Geoffrey really had been helping him with his book.
But their visit takes another dramatic turn when someone breaks into the house.
The trio pursues the intruder through the woods and over a stone wall, but the mysterious figure manages to escape before they can identify him.
Just when the investigation appears to be opening up even more questions, Becks makes another troubling discovery.
The episode ends with a threatening letter containing a simple warning:
“Stop or I’ll tell everyone your secret.”
With Geoffrey’s killer still unidentified and multiple characters hiding potentially damaging secrets, The Marlow Murder Club Season 3 begins with another mystery that promises to become much bigger than a poisoned cup of coffee.
The Marlow Murder Club airs Sundays at 8/7c on PBS.
