‘The Lowdown’ Moves Closer to Its Return as Season 2 Wraps Production

Fans of The Lowdown have another reason to look forward to the series’ next chapter. Creator Sterlin Harjo has confirmed that production on Season 2 has officially wrapped, bringing the acclaimed FX drama one step closer to its long-awaited return.

Ethan Hawke behind the scenes of 'The Lowdown'

Harjo shared the milestone on social media with a behind-the-scenes cast photo that not only celebrated the end of filming but also offered the first glimpse of several new faces joining the series. Among the most notable additions is Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones, whose role remains under wraps. The image has already sparked excitement among viewers eager to see how the expanding ensemble will shape the story’s next chapter.

Although FX has yet to announce an official premiere date, actor Michael Hitchcock recently hinted that the new season could arrive this fall. While the timeline remains unconfirmed, the production update suggests the series is steadily moving toward its return.

The Lowdown earned praise during its debut season for blending noir storytelling with sharp humor and a distinctive Oklahoma backdrop. At the center of the story is Lee Raybon, played by Ethan Hawke, a self-described “truthstorian” reporter whose investigation into a mysterious death revealed a web of secrets throughout Tulsa. The series also explored Raybon’s evolving relationship with his daughter Francis while introducing an eccentric community of memorable characters.

Looking ahead, Harjo has expressed confidence in the show’s long-term future. During Season 1, he explained that each installment is designed to function as its own chapter while contributing to a larger narrative. Hawke echoed that vision, saying the goal was to create stories with satisfying conclusions that still leave audiences eager for what comes next.

Much of the original cast is expected to return, including Keith David, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kaniehtiio Horn, and Michael Hitchcock. Kyle MacLachlan may also reprise his role, although his involvement has not been officially confirmed.

Season 2 will also welcome several high-profile newcomers. In addition to Tommy Lee Jones, the cast now includes Betty Gilpin, Austin Amelio, Martha Plimpton, and Clifton Collins Jr. Details surrounding their characters remain tightly guarded, leaving fans to speculate about their impact on the unfolding mystery.

Harjo has also hinted that more familiar faces from his previous hit series Reservation Dogs could appear in future episodes. After cameo appearances from Devery Jacobs and Paulina Alexis in Season 1, the creator suggested that additional cast members may eventually join The Lowdown, further strengthening the creative connection between his two acclaimed shows.

While plot details for the upcoming season remain scarce, viewers can expect the story to continue exploring Lee Raybon’s pursuit of truth, his complicated personal relationships, and the mysteries that continue to surround Tulsa. With production now complete and anticipation continuing to build, Season 2 is shaping up to be one of FX’s most closely watched returning dramas.
