‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ Episode 6 Sends the Gang Into Its Strangest Universe Yet

After escaping one disastrous reality, Stuart and the gang find themselves in perhaps their strangest universe yet in Episode 6 of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe — a world where humanity evolved from cows.

The group arrives in a reality that looks surprisingly similar to their own, except humans have cow-like digestive systems. Everyone eats grass, chews cud and seems perfectly content with their unusual way of life. Even baseball is slightly different, with no designated hitter, while Skechers slip-ins apparently never existed.

For Stuart (Kevin Sussman) and Denise (Lauren Lapkus), however, the Cow Universe starts to look less ridiculous and more like home.

Stuart and Denise Find an Unexpected Paradise

After everything the group has endured, Stuart is exhausted by the constant search for a universe that might actually be safe. Since the Cow Universe appears peaceful, he and Denise decide there may be no reason to leave.

Sussman explained that Stuart’s attraction to the reality comes from sheer exhaustion. After repeatedly finding universes that are trying to kill them, Stuart is finally willing to accept a world that is “close enough” to normal.

Denise feels the same way, and the two settle into their new cow-human lifestyle. Their relationship even reaches a major milestone when Stuart proposes to Denise while vomiting up cud — an undeniably bizarre moment that somehow becomes romantic in the context of their new reality.

Bert (Brian Posehn) and Kripke (John Ross Bowie), however, aren’t convinced. The two leave the Cow Universe in search of something better, only to land in a reality where they appear to be falling endlessly through a seemingly bottomless void.

Raj Returns With a Terrifying Warning

The Cow Universe also brings an unexpected reunion when Raj (Kunal Nayyar) turns up alive as a doomsday survivalist.

Raj has been trying to warn the cow-people that their universe is slowly disappearing. He points to the disappearance of Galaxy GNZ11 and other celestial objects, claiming that entire star systems near the edge of the universe are vanishing.

According to Raj’s calculations, the entire universe could eventually disappear within a few hundred years.

For Stuart and Denise, though, that’s not exactly an immediate concern. After all they’ve survived, they’re more interested in enjoying the present than worrying about what might happen centuries from now.

Stuart Learns Why He Must Save the Universe

Back at the comic book store, Stuart finally gets an explanation for why he was given the mysterious device in the first place.

The other Stuart reveals that Stuart Prime is quantum-mechanically entangled with the original event that caused the universe to diverge. Because of that connection, Stuart is permanently linked to the device — making him the only person capable of using it to save the universe.

The revelation doesn’t exactly make Stuart feel better. In every reality he’s visited, he continues to see himself as a failed comic book store owner who somehow ended up responsible for saving existence itself.

The other Stuart can’t help directly because he’s only a projection from a collapsing reality, but he does offer one bizarre solution: Stuart should order another device through the back of a comic book.

That turns out to be surprisingly effective. Delivery man Gary (Tommy Walker) arrives with a second device, which is revealed to be a quantum echo of the original.

Eventually, Stuart and Denise reunite with the still-falling Bert and Kripke and jump into another universe — one where everyone can read each other’s minds.

Naturally, that creates an entirely new problem when Kripke’s private thoughts are suddenly exposed to everyone: “My mother bathed me until I was 12.”

And with that, the gang’s search for a way to save the universe becomes even stranger.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe airs Thursdays at 9/8c on HBO Max.
