HBO’s Rooster is moving closer to its second season, with co-creator Bill Lawrence teasing that production has officially resumed. The update offers an encouraging sign for fans of the Steve Carell-led comedy, which became one of HBO’s strongest new comedy launches in recent years.

The series was officially renewed for Season 2 while its 10-episode first season was still airing. The renewal came after Rooster averaged 5.8 million viewers across its first four episodes in the United States, making it HBO’s most-watched freshman comedy in more than a decade.
Although HBO has yet to announce a premiere date for the new season, Lawrence revealed that filming began in August. With production now underway, the series is expected to return to screens sooner rather than later, although a specific release window has not been confirmed. A 2027 premiere remains a possibility.
Created by Lawrence and Matt Tarses, Rooster centers on Greg Russo, a writer who takes a job at Ludlow College while trying to support his daughter, Katie, following an unexpected challenge in her marriage. The comedy blends workplace dynamics with family relationships as Greg adjusts to his new environment.
Both Lawrence and Tarses have already discussed a larger plan for the series. Tarses previously said that three seasons would likely be enough to tell the story they have envisioned. Lawrence agreed, while also acknowledging that the experience of making the show has been enjoyable enough that he could continue it for much longer.
Season 2 is expected to continue following Greg, Katie and the wider community at Ludlow College, although specific story details have not yet been revealed. The creative team has kept the next chapter largely under wraps as production moves forward.
HBO has also not officially confirmed the full returning cast. However, Carell is expected to remain at the center of the series, with Charly Clive, Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, Lauren Tsai and Robby Hoffman among the ensemble members likely to return. Connie Britton, who appears in a recurring role, could also potentially be back.
The renewal has been welcomed by the show’s creators, who previously expressed gratitude to HBO and Warner Bros. Television for allowing them to continue developing the series with Carell and the ensemble cast.
For now, fans will have to wait for further announcements regarding the premiere date, storyline and returning cast. With cameras already rolling, however, the next chapter of Rooster is officially taking shape.
Rooster Season 2 will premiere on HBO and HBO Max at a date yet to be announced.
