Patrick Ball has offered a glimpse into The Pitt Season 3, revealing that Dr. Frank Langdon will return to the emergency department while the hospital faces new leadership and shifting relationships.

The Pitt Season 3 is taking shape with several changes both inside and outside the emergency room. In a recent interview with TV Insider, Patrick Ball, who plays Dr. Frank Langdon, revealed that the upcoming season will pick up directly from the events of Season 2 while continuing to explore Langdon’s personal recovery and professional journey.

According to Ball, production on the 15-episode season is already underway. The actor said the cast and crew had begun filming Episode 5 and described the new scripts as “really good,” adding that the production was working in a strong rhythm.

For Langdon, Season 3 will continue the character’s development following the difficult events of the previous season. Rather than returning immediately to the confident doctor audiences saw in Season 1, Langdon will remain shaped by his experience in rehabilitation and the loss of confidence he faced throughout Season 2.

One of the biggest changes will involve the hospital’s leadership. With Robby away, Al-Hashimi has been steering the emergency department for several months, creating a new dynamic for the doctors and staff. Ball suggested that the shift in leadership will have an impact on Langdon and his relationships with those around him.

The actor also teased further developments between Langdon and several key characters, including Robby, Santos, Dana, Mel and Whitaker. His relationship with Al-Hashimi is also expected to receive more attention, particularly following the fallout from her overhearing Langdon and Santos’ conversation in Season 2.

Another relationship Ball hopes to see explored further is Langdon’s connection with McKay, played by Fiona Dourif. Both characters have experience with recovery, although McKay is further along in her journey. Ball described that shared experience as something that could bring the two characters closer together.

Professionally, Langdon will also return to the high-pressure environment where he feels most comfortable. In Season 1, he spent much of his time in the trauma rooms, handling fast-paced emergencies. Season 2 saw him working in triage after returning from a 10-month absence, forcing him to adjust to a different pace.

Season 3 will see Langdon back in the emergency department and gradually finding his confidence again. Ball said the events of Season 2 were necessary for Langdon to rebuild his ability to handle life-and-death situations after such a long break.

The actor also hinted that viewers will discover another unexpected detail about Langdon’s personality. After revealing in Season 2 that the character enjoys historical reenactments, Ball confirmed that another “fun new nugget” about Langdon will emerge in the upcoming season, although he stopped short of revealing what it is.

The Pitt Season 3 is scheduled to premiere in 2027 on HBO Max.
