Kyle’s increasingly unpredictable behavior takes a darker turn in Lioness Season 3, Episode 4, “Murder Hornets,” as Thad Luckinbill’s character makes a deadly decision while the team races to rescue Joe.

The latest episode picks up with Joe, played by Zoe Saldaña, still in Russian captivity after being abducted. She is tortured by her captors before being taken to a plane, leaving Kaitlyn, Byron and Edwin Mullen scrambling to figure out what to do next.

The stakes are particularly high because Joe’s knowledge of the Lioness program could become a major security threat if the Russians obtain information from her. The situation could become even more dangerous if Joe is handed over to Iran, where her capture could lead to a highly publicized trial and execution.

Kyle takes matters into his own hands

Two Cups and Bobby eventually locate the hangar where Joe had been held. Kyle devises a way for the team to approach the location without immediately alerting anyone inside.

But by the time they arrive, Joe is already gone.

Instead, the team finds two men who were left behind after the plane departed. Bobby wants to bring the men in for questioning, but Kyle chooses a very different approach.

When the first hostage refuses to provide useful information, Kyle kills him. He then questions the second man, who gives them the aircraft’s tail number. Unlike the first hostage, the second man is allowed to live.

Bobby immediately reports Kyle’s actions to Kaitlyn. Kyle, however, argues that the situation is too serious to involve ordinary law enforcement and that recovering Joe is more important than following conventional procedures.

Kaitlyn reprimands him, but she ultimately gives Kyle another assignment: bringing Oleksandra back so they can potentially obtain information that could help locate Joe.

The decision further establishes Kyle as one of the show’s more unpredictable figures—and increasingly one of its most important players.

Thad Luckinbill on Kyle’s evolution

Luckinbill admitted that he did not expect Kyle to become such a major part of Season 3.

According to the actor, the ensemble nature of Lioness means that almost any character can step into the spotlight, and he credits Taylor Sheridan with continuing to expand Kyle’s role.

Luckinbill also described Kyle as one of the most enjoyable characters he has ever played because of the number of different sides to him.

When he first read the scripts, he began drawing inspiration from different actors and characters he felt could help shape Kyle. But one quality developed more strongly as the season progressed: Kyle’s willingness to do whatever is necessary to accomplish the mission.

His attitude has become increasingly uncompromising. For Kyle, the objective comes first, even when achieving it means crossing lines that others on the team would not.

Kyle’s connection to Joe goes deeper than the mission

Despite his ruthless approach, Luckinbill believes Kyle genuinely cares about Joe.

The two characters have a long history together, having worked with the CIA for years and previously relied on one another professionally. That shared experience has given Kyle a strong understanding of both Joe and the consequences of her capture.

Luckinbill explained that Kyle understands exactly what could happen if Joe’s captors extract information from her.

Joe has extensive knowledge of the Lioness program, meaning her capture could potentially put numerous people and operations at risk. Kyle therefore sees rescuing her as more than a personal mission—it is also a matter of preventing sensitive intelligence from falling into enemy hands.

The actor pointed to an example from Season 1, when Joe was forced to make an extremely difficult decision involving her own Lioness. Kyle understands the consequences of Joe falling into enemy hands and believes drastic action may be necessary to prevent that from happening again.

His relationship with Kaitlyn becomes more complicated

Kyle’s confrontation with Kaitlyn also reveals an interesting shift in their relationship.

Luckinbill explained that Kyle has a higher level of clearance than the QRF team, similar to Joe. That gives him access to information and a broader understanding of the geopolitical consequences surrounding the mission.

Kaitlyn, therefore, recognizes that Kyle understands the seriousness of the situation—but she also knows that he handled the situation in a way that could create problems for everyone.

According to Luckinbill, Kaitlyn’s response is essentially a mixture of reprimanding Kyle while acknowledging that he may have understood the larger stakes correctly. The problem was the way he acted and the people who witnessed it.

That complicated dynamic is part of what makes Kyle increasingly interesting in Season 3. He is not simply operating outside the rules for the sake of doing so. He believes his experience gives him the authority to make difficult decisions, even when those decisions put him at odds with the rest of the team.

Luckinbill also praised Nicole Kidman, who plays Kaitlyn, describing their working relationship as especially enjoyable because of the way their characters depend on one another.

With Joe still missing and the geopolitical stakes continuing to rise, Kyle’s increasingly unconventional methods could become even more important as Lioness Season 3 moves forward.
